Sources for Freelance Writing Jobs

Updated on January 26, 2010

Beginning a career as a freelance writer or building your writing business takes considerable effort. Fortunately, several sources of freelance writing jobs are immediately accessible on the Internet. It has never been easier to find freelance writing opportunities.

When I was starting my freelance writing career, I joined Elance, a freelance job marketplace. This was one of the best decisions that I ever made. Through Elance, I connected with a client who has used my writing services almost constantly over the last few years. This client also referred me to other clients in need of writing services. In addition to this client, I secured other freelance writing opportunities including a job for a small publisher. Since using Elance to get started, I have not had the need to maintain my account on that website.

Unfortunately, many writers are willing to write for pennies. When using a website like Elance where writers bid on assignments, writers who expect to earn a fair wage for their work are often outbid by writers who are happy with low wages. However, websites like Elance can help the writer make valuable contacts for ongoing work.

Besides freelance job marketplace websites, writers can choose freelance writing jobs from available assignments on websites that provide articles to other websites. Demand Studios is a website that provides numerous writing assignments that pay between $3 for a short tip assignment to $15 for longer articles. AOL’s is a similar website that has fewer available assignments but pays significantly more for their articles. pays $15 to hundreds of dollars for its freelance writing assignments.

Of course, there are websites like HubPages and Triond where writers are free to write about their interests and receive a portion of the ad revenue as pay. The freedom to write on almost any topic and ongoing, passive income are benefits of these writing opportunities. Income from these sources is often slow. It takes considerable time and effort to build to the income.

Writers can provide their own writing opportunities by building their own websites. A little SEO research can identify topics that have a good chance of being found. The writer can use a website like WordPress to generate a content-rich website. Income for these websites can be through Google AdSense and related affiliate programs.
