Steps - A Poem (To Chris)
STEPS
With every step
I’m reminded of tiny feet
stretched upward in the crib
and the gurgling laughter
when excited eyes first caught
them.
With every step you take
I see the little feet
that stepped high into the air
to stretch past the sidewalk cracks
during lazy afternoon walks.
With every step you take up
I remember the other big steps
of T-ball, and starting school,
First Holy Communion,
and your first dance.
With every step you take up those stairs
and toward that rolled diploma
I realize
your steps must continue,
And wish that we could take
a few
steps
back.
