Suspense, Chills, and Medical Thrills, Tess Gerritsen
You Will Turn Page After Page Until The Very End
Rizzoli and Isle, Crime Thriller Series
I never use to read for fun until one day, bored at work, I picked up the book The Mephisto Club. I began reading and turning the pages not being able to get enough as the first chapter hooked me right in. In three days I completed the book, which for a novel is really good for me. I couldn’t get over how intense, clever and suspenseful this book was. From then on, I became a huge fan of author Tess Gerritsen. One time physician who became an author, Gerritsen has the talent and imagination to keep readers from ever putting down one her books until the very last page.
The Mephisto Club was book number six in the infamous medical thriller series of Rizzoli and Isle. After learning about the series, I began from the beginning. The Rizzoli and Isle series kicks off with the first book called The Surgeon. You are introduced to the tough, wisecracking yet beautiful Jane Rizzoli, a homicide detective with the Boston Police Department who loves nothing more than being a cop, and is a damn good one too. In the second book called The Apprentice, you are introduced to the other main character in the series, Maura Isle. She is a young and attractive medical examiner who knows way too much about anything and everything. Their duet in the series gives new meaning to the “odd couple.”
The Surgeon starts off with a serial killer who likes to stalk the streets of Boston preying on women who are in a vulnerable state of their lives. When Rizzoli starts finding the victims, the precise cuttings on the victim leave her to believe that this is the work of someone in the medical field. The Boston Police Department gives the suspect the name, “the surgeon.” As she gets closer and more involved in the case, Rizzoli gets more than what she bargained for.
The Apprentice picks up right where The Surgeon left off. When what seems to be the work of a copy cat serial killer, Rizzoli is lead to believe that another killer such as the surgeon, is trying to once again get the attention of the authorities and has them wondering if they have caught the wrong guy. Similar wounds and rituals have got the Boston Police Department second guessing on who really might be the surgeon.
Tess Gerritsen doesn’t stop the suspense or thrills there. She goes on to add six more books to the popular crime thrillers. The rest of the books in the series are: The Sinner, Body Double, Vanish, The Mephisto Club, The Keepsake and the newest addition, Ice Cold. After Gerritsen’s works became no stranger to the New York’s bestsellers list, T.N.T decided to make a television series based on the characters and her writings. If you have not checked out the show, you should. You won’t be disappointed. Angie Harmon has taken on the character of Jane Rizzoli. Sasha Alexander portrays the character of Maura Isle. The show started off with The Surgeon and The Apprentice being the main plot of the first episode. The two actresses really play the part of these characters quite well.
Tess Gerritsen gave up a successful physician practice to become an author. With a medical background, Gerritsen leaves no minor details out when getting graphic about the murders in her stories. Gerritsen has a marvelous way of hooking readers from the very first page of any one of her books. She also has many other novels that are not in the Rizzoli and Isle series which are worth reading. She takes the genre of crime thrillers, and adds her unique twists and turns which will have readers struggling to put the book down till the very end.
Some years have passed since I wrote this article, and Gerritsen is still one of my favorite authors. She has released a few more novels, both in the Rizzoli and Isles series and some independent ones. She is still an amazing author and does so well with suspense and mystery. I hope you check her works out.
