Whatever Happened to Nigger Jim?

The Censors are Coming-The Censors are Coming

The “N Word” for those who haven’t heard

Isn’t “Nuts” or “Nice” or “Nerd.”

It’s amazing how much trouble its speaker it gives

It’s meaning quite historical not poetic or rhetorical.

It isn’t just pejorative: It’s hist’ry of the way they lived.

They’ve gone and killed old nigger Jim.

Washed off the black then white washed him

African-Americans, Negroes, Coloreds, Blacks it all comes back again.

Forget the name, get through your fear cause this is something bigger!

Semantically separating and generating “Staunch stalwart Jim”

It seems that we’ve castrated him and now we can erase our sins.

And everything was peachy and just fine.

This word evokes a horrid time when people were called ‘yours’ or ‘mine’.

Human souls were sold as chattel a fact that caused this Nation to battle

Itself. Until inside we changed; our moral compass rearranged.

If not for the word that galled us; for that nasty truth that appalled us

Would there ever have been a war?

If slavery was cordial proper and prim and everyone called him “Brother Jim”

Would it really have told the true tale?

Beware of the blade that is “PC” its cut is so shallow we barely see

how it clouds our minds with it’s might.

As a short example I’ll give you a simple sample

Of the PC posse and its magical, mind numbing knife.

We’ve all heard of “B.C.”

And only with the letter “E” innocuous as it might be they obfuscate Christ’s life.

Was he God? Well I don’t care it’s really neither her nor there.

Personally I just don’t like the change.

Imagine everything else that they might rearrange

Millions of believers have ignored that PC cleaver!

Too far from their hearts to make waves.

Without the Yang there is no Yin, no hint of Heaven or of sin.

All is lost if no one can be Saved.

“These aren’t your Droids”, said Obi Wan and the evil threat was blocked.

And so, pedantic, proper, people pry from us our right to shock.

Soon bye and bye our minds grow slowly numb

Nothing shocking this way comes,

Our words not teeth just rotten gums

Capable of nothing!

Those days were appalling and horrifying! I could not imagine living in those times. I embrace all people and so does my family. Amazingly we are a melting pot of many. As for the pic that you used, the person who has that displayed in his/her yard is nothing but ignorant. Do not like the 'Word', but your point about racism and ignorance is clearly defined. Thumbs Up!

It's not the words we use it's the mind set that we teach. I was metaphorically speaking about the way that Hitler and his MINONS inslaved millions just because of a misguided sense of superiority. Somewhat akin to the way slavery was done here during our misguided past. My question is this, will we as a species, ever out grow this misguidedness or will we always be slaves to the whims of the people who think they are superior? It's not the remembering that will keep it from happing again, It's when WE forget what happened that gives rise to the mindset. thank you sir for your time and your willingness to speak your mind. and letting an old hillbilly have a say.

      to bri36:

thanks for weighing in, but, I didn't quite catch your drift. "whoever doesn't..." is actually a quote from george santyana. I believe you were reffering to the quote over the gates of the Nazi prison cam 'Aushwitz' It said, "arbeit macht frei" That translates to,"work makes one free." 'nazi'is another one of those horrible words to me. Some people also want to forget that the"Holocaust" ever happened.may we always remember the horrors of our past, and not repeat them...eddie

Funny thing is this, over the door to the bunker Hitler had these words chisled.

Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat tell me again why i am offended?

Before the Common Era, you mean? Yes, this is a bit over the top. I really don't think most non-Christians have a problem with the Before Christ dating. But of course the people you hear about, are the ones who complain.

Thank you three for reading and commenting. To those who agree with my take, I am grateful.

To Jami who disagrees: I am also grateful.

Like her I also agree that anyone who condones slavery is sick in the head; Yes those days were and are offensive; But did you read what I wrote? That word is one of, if not the WORST I have ever heard. I must disagree with you that we should bury the past and I will almost always disagree; on almost ANY point, issue or point of view that "Everyone should feel the same" as you say. Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it. Twain's point and mine is to hold that horror up to the light so that all can see it and determine, no, demand that it never happen again...Eddie

This was a creative write , Mark twain , was a great writer , many wonderful epoch stories , but an appalling alcoholic and miser , . Ive toured his homes and read quite a bit of autobiographies and he is a story of work all by himself ... His language use appalling and uncalled for , im glad they are soon to censor it , everyone should feel the same , i dont care what color or nationality anyone is , but the times of slavery are extremely offensive even to us "white folk", those days and times should be tucked away in a "shame hall of fame", have a great evening,People that condoned slavery back thin were sick in the head .

The whole purpuse of Twain using that horrible word was to make people as angry as he was at society. I have heard beforethat the word is being replaced in the American South with the word "slave" so that it is appropriate to study in high schools. Changing the word in Hucklebery Finn to slave just makes it an ordinary adventure tale. Not Twain's objective.
