The Darkest Journey
What happened to our friendship
Did it fade with the setting sun
When it seemed to have just begun
What of your daily worship
And talk of your hopes and dreams
Did it end with your short courtship
Was it all just strawberries and cream
And what of your great love
The love you spoke about
The love that no-one could match
Because you were the best catch
From the available men in the batch
Did it sink into the ocean
Where the depth of your feelings once began
And followed with repeated commotion
When plans of the future in your head
Had all but become dead.
And what of your affection
Was there some loss of connection
Between your heart and your idea of perfection
Perhaps you were hoping for a resurrection
By some miraculous power of natural selection
And now, what of me
Am I to be forsaken
Never again to obey your whim
And that insistent will
I fear it is crystal clear
To set me free my dear
For I want to be me
And feel the wind in my face you see
I can feel a cold breeze
But not yet cold enough to freeze
The memories I hold near
The ones with no fear
I ask that you hand me the key
To unlock my heart and be bold
And set me apart
From your clutching hold
And spring from this height of loveless views
Onto the safe, solid sureness of land
Before I lose my nerve
And bend and curve
And hang in that place where there is no return.
