The Demons that We Chase

Updated on November 26, 2013

Negative Space

Something is given

and then taken.

Once found is lost

over and over.

Pain is felt in the human body

after pressure is released.

Sensation comes after the drug is removed.

The initial cut is a release

Weakness is felt only after the blood is spilled.

Hunger comes after food is digested.

Thirst when you know the water is gone.

A lock before a key is inserted,

just a hollow space.

Beauty turns to dust

China becomes clay

Diamonds become coal

Iron turns brittle

Happiness becomes angry

Pleasure becomes pain

We dance together

You and I

One face bathed in light

The other black

as the deepest abyss

One is strong

The other clinging

to anything within reach

One creates love,

brings laughter to all she meets

The other destroys

all that is beautiful

One plays

One screams

One swims

The other drowns

Both fight to lead the song

singing in full voice

to silence the other

" My Skin"

...With a few perfectly place words you can take your lucky readers through the poetic gamut of emotions - that's sheer natural talent and something in which you do with grace, style and ease.

The title caught my eye - and you do have a way with titles which I feel are very important in representing our work ....

"Both fight to lead the song,

      singing in full voice,

      to silence the other"

I really like this last line. It turns an image that should be happy, "singing in full voice" into something decidedly not. It's an emotional dichotomy worthy of finishing an emotional poem.
