The Doula

The birth of our son Elias.
The birth of our son Elias. | Source

Did she grab everything from her home?

Kiss goodbye her kids, her family.

Her client has started her labor,

she will meet with her clients midwife

at hospital prior to the birth

to be there at onset of struggle.

At E.R. they met as the struggle

had driven the new mom from her home

labor pains point towards a birth,

a lonely woman without family,

yet at her side Doula and Midwife,

her new family, a family of labor.

They hurry her to a room to labor.

"I am scared." she whispers through her struggle.

Doula massaged her, nurse talk midwife.

"All the world's women here, your birth home."

the Doula says, "They are your family."

Witnesses to your story of birth.

The Doula turns on music for birth,

Peppermint oil, soft music for labor,

feel the love, the love of our family.

Breath with each Doula breath, the struggle,

and soon you will hear a cry for home

positioned with Doula and Midwife.

Centimeters forward the midwife

moves the baby, to ready for birth,

makes sure the babies head is at home

in the pelvis for active labor.

Doula prepares the Mom for the struggle.

Generations trained as if family.

Doula's hands a fingered family

creates sphincter comfort for midwife

as Mom squats and breaths through the struggle.

Memorable moments crowning the birth.

Mom exhausted from her long labor

as new life cries for warmth, a new home.

Each family starts with glorious birth.

Midwife trained in the art of labor.

A Doula's struggle to return home.

Yes, yes. I have about five or so poems with mothers and babies. Actually, if my memory serves me right, didn't I dedicate one to you once? About babies, I believe. "Suffer little children to come unto me ...-The Christ. Happy Easter Week!

Thank you manatita44. The power of birth sometimes is overlooked and so many people keep their incredible birth stories within their family. We all need to hear more to understand better how newborn mothers and families can be supported. Jamie

Beautiful. My first child was delivered by a male doctor. (There are many wonderful such doctors, I'm sure.) He stood out in the hall and watched an action movie while I was in labor. Thank goodness it wasn't a double feature! My other three deliveries were overseen (and participated in) by women. Don't take a Ford to a Chevy dealer - I say!
