The Mortal Instruments City of Bones

Updated on March 18, 2015

The Begining

Clary is a normal teenager, living in her normal world in Brooklyn. But when she goes to the Pandemonium Club with her best friend, Simon, the last thing she expects is to witness a murder. She sees the three teenagers clad in black, wielding the most weird weapons ever and covered in strange swirling tattoos .

The Mystery

Even more astonishingly, the dead body disappears into thin air and Simon thinks she might be going crazy as the murderers are not visible to anyone. Going back home, she finds that her mother is missing and the whole house is upside down. That's when a demon attacks her and she is able to fight it without any training. As the story unfolds, Clary gets to know that these weapon wielding teenagers are Shadowhunters, warriors who kill demons, who enter our world from different dimensions. She even meets Jace, who is extraordinarily beautiful and a very big jerk, but he helps her find her mother and unfold the mystery of why she does not remember anything about the Shadowhunting world.

It is filled with spooky Silent Brothers, funky Magnus Bane (warlock) and disgusting demons. The book will take you on a roller coaster ride, filled with the most unexpected twists and turns and conclusion. This ferociously entertaining fantasy will keep you wanting more.

The Characters

There are a number of engrossing characters, apart from the engrossing storyline.

Just like everyone, Clary thinks she is different. But unlike most of us, this turns out to be true for her. After witnessing the murder, her life completely changes as her mother is kidnapped, her mom's best friend,Luke, whom Clary has known since she was a kid, refuses to talk to her. The Silent Brothers tell her that her memories were muddled with, and what she thinks is the truth may be placed inside her head by someone else.Totally clueless about the Shadowhunting world, she is helped by Jace,Isabelle and an unwilling Alec.

Came to live with the Lightwoods after his father's death, he stays at a distance from everyone, though he cares about his foster parents and siblings. He is very good at hiding his feelings but it's obvious he likes Clary and against Alec's wishes Jace helps her. Acts like a jerk most of the times, but still Clary falls for him like every other girl who sees him. Very much aware of his beauty, he is an excellent fighter and is proud of it. He is the first one to suggest that Clary is a Shadowhunter.

Clary's best friend since they were kids, he is a witty nerd. From the beginning it's very much obvious that he likes Clary but she is totally clueless. He is sucked into the Shadowhunting world along with Clary as he is unwilling to leave her side. As he sees Clary falling for Jace, he warns her that he is just using her.

The Moie

The movie of City of Bones came out on 21st August 2013 and is a must watch if you liked the book. It stars Lily Collins as Clary and Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace. Unfortunately, more movies will not come but there are rumors about a TV series.

More To The City of Bones

There are six books in the Mortal Instruments series and if you liked the first one, you cannot help but read the other books too. All of them are equally gripping and full of the most unexpected turns. There are also three books in the prequel- Infernal Devices. They reveal more about Clary, Jace and Alec's ancestors and even include the immortal Magnus Bane. If you've read the first book, then the Bane Chronicles is a must because it not only tells more about Magnus, but about a number of other characters introduced in the Mortal instruments, including Jocelyn(Clary's mother).
