The Phenomenal Woman: Maya Angelou (Rest in perfect peace)
A phenomenal woman
With a brave and startling truth
Oh! You are like a mother: a cradle to hold me
For your sake I shout, mom and me and mom!
You have the heart of a woman
Hallelujah! You gave hope to the prostitutes and sexually abused
Now there is a celebration ritual of peace and prayer
For your sake, life doesn’t frighten me any more
You said, “Gather together in my name”
For your name is a song flung up to heaven
Oh! Shakers, why don’t you sing
For now, Sheba sings the song
Now I hear, “Just give me a cool drink of water for I die”
Oh! Pray my wings are gonna fit me well
And I shall not be moved
For even though I may fall and still I rise
Not even a black candle
For I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now
Even the stars look lonesome
For although, all God’s children need a traveling shoes
Now, I know why the caged Bird sings
On the pulse of morning
Singing and swinging and getting merry like Christmas
For the phenomenal woman is gone and heaven rejoice for a job well done
A LETTER TO MY DAUGHTER, OUR DAUGHTERS, TO LEARN FROM THIS GREAT WOMAN.
IN LOVING MEMORY OF MAYA ANGELOU
