We Look, But Do Not Always See

Updated on December 3, 2013

The Smartest Girl in the Room

I was so smart.

I knew how you loved.

I watched.

Particpated on the fringe of your life.

I saw.

I saw you love completely.

You loved truly, with your whole heart.

I envied that love.

Desired it.

Was determined to find it.

If I couldn't have you,

I would have something close to it.

I knew it all.

I knew who you loved.

Knew that it wasn't me.

It could never be me.

I saw nothing.

I knew nothing.

Did not know that your smile was for me.

Each little accidental touch was on purpose.

Each joke you told

was by design to hear my laugh.

I was the smartest girl in the room

I greatly admire poets; maybe because I seem to lack that gene. :) I love this; it is stripped down to the bare essentials and yet filled with emotion...well done.

Thank you so much for your comments, Marlena! And the punctuation was on purpose and I am delighted that it had the desired effect. I have been experimenting with things like that lately and your encouragement is much appreciated!

Love this poem! I love the shortness of the lines, but I especially love how you end almost each line with a period (not sure if on purpose or accidental) but it sends a deep thought in just one line: "I knew how you loved. I watched." I can imagine this girl with dagger eyes watching her love lust after someone else. Thank you for the imagery!

Just lovely! So many girls can relate, but do not always get it until it is too late.

      Smiles,
