The Struggle With a Bit of Hope

Updated on January 17, 2016

It’s when you grow up

that you come to know

that old cliché about

how life isn’t fair

is much more real

than you thought

And that sometimes

yes, the world

does tend to give you

a bit more than your can handle

for reasons you come

to never understand.

Bad things do happen

to very good people

awful ones can get rewards,

as folks don’t always

get what they deserve.

Justice is often delayed

and sometimes never comes

wrongs don’t necessarily get righted

and nightmares come true.

Day to day

is full of bumps,

sacrifices and compromises.

Someone may be taking credit

gaining more

from all your hard work

or blocking you

for where you want to be.

What gets you through

is not a phrase

or an idea of how the world should be.

It is just finding a light

amid a sea of dark

just finding a thing

it can be so small

but something

to hold onto

a moment of happy

a good thing to look forward to

something to treasure

to pull you out of all that sadness.

When you think of that thing

it fills your heart

broadens your place

opens your eyes.

Yes things could always be worse

and someone else has properly got it rougher.

The alternative to the present

is some kind of death.

And in the end

you would indeed miss

that one little thing

that makes you want to fight another day.

Hang onto your piece of happy

however small it might be,

even if others don’t think it important.

We all struggle

and though you feel it

you are never alone

someone has been there

and survived.

The truth about life summed up pretty well in this sweet poem. Life is a paradox and certainly getting through it with "our piece of happy" makes it much easier.

A sliver of light among endless dark, great thinking.

Surround yourself with happiness when you can control your environment. At least that will make it all right for a while. Best wishes!

Thanks for the comments. I wrote it for myself, because I am going through a rough time right now. I needed to remind myself that I do still have a little piece of happy . . .

Despite the struggle, you inspire me with:

      "a moment of happy

a good thing to look forward to

      something to treasure."

Thanks for pointing to the light.

I love the advice in this poem. The first part of the poem is sad because what you say is so true. The second part is uplifting and inspiring. This is a poem to remember during the depressing times of life.

I agree. Life is a gift and sometimes it gets rough but we keep putting one foot in front of the other. Thought provoking read!

Yes truthfornow, we have to hold on to our own "little piece of happy." That can get us through and make life worthwhile. Good poem.
