The Struggle With a Bit of Hope
It’s when you grow up
that you come to know
that old cliché about
how life isn’t fair
is much more real
than you thought
And that sometimes
yes, the world
does tend to give you
a bit more than your can handle
for reasons you come
to never understand.
Bad things do happen
to very good people
awful ones can get rewards,
as folks don’t always
get what they deserve.
Justice is often delayed
and sometimes never comes
wrongs don’t necessarily get righted
and nightmares come true.
Day to day
is full of bumps,
challenges,
sacrifices and compromises.
Someone may be taking credit
gaining more
from all your hard work
or blocking you
for where you want to be.
What gets you through
is not a phrase
or an idea of how the world should be.
It is just finding a light
amid a sea of dark
just finding a thing
it can be so small
but something
to hold onto
a moment of happy
a good thing to look forward to
something to treasure
to pull you out of all that sadness.
When you think of that thing
it fills your heart
broadens your place
opens your eyes.
Yes things could always be worse
and someone else has properly got it rougher.
The alternative to the present
is some kind of death.
And in the end
you would indeed miss
that one little thing
that makes you want to fight another day.
Hang onto your piece of happy
however small it might be,
even if others don’t think it important.
We all struggle
and though you feel it
you are never alone
someone has been there
and survived.
