The World of Undiscovered Poets: Kahala Lei
Just as an artist must suffer for his art, a poet suffers for his poetry. There is connection with overcoming great hardships, and creating the most magnificent masterpieces in the world. Great hardships cause us pain, and that pain tears at us piece by piece until all that is left is the rawness of our true existence. It is ironic that the work we create in our most desperate hours is often the work that is most appreciated by our fans, and as unfair as this might seem, an artist wouldn't have it any other way.
The poet I would like you to discover this week, is the true definition of a poet suffering for her poetry. This woman has slept on park benches in the roughest parts of the city of Philadelphia, she has been placed in life and death situations, and through it all she has fought tooth and nail for her right to exist. The life she has lived is a work of poetry, and it is with great honor that I present to you:
Kahala Lei
Born and raised in the meant streets of North Philadelphia, Kahala Lei is no stranger to struggle. She began writing poetry as a release from the abuse she suffered from her world. Poetry and her love for God were the things that got her out of those streets with most of her insanity intact. Even after getting out of Philadelphia, she still had to face the struggles of being a single mother without a dime to her name trying to make her way in a state where she knew not one person. Somehow she was able to scratch up enough to put a roof over her children's heads and food on the table. Life by no means has been easy for Kahala Lei, but she finds a way to endure.
Through all the struggles, Kahala Lei, still finds the time to write her poetry. With influences such as Maya Angelou, her poetry is all about teaching people about the affairs of the world. In fact, teaching is one of her specialties, as she has spent time teaching poetry to troubled youths, and several of her poems have been used for academic purposes. She also has a series of books in the works about faith based testimonies of fellow Christians. Lastly she is working on a CD project about the things that need to be fixed with America.
