The Lovers And The River (poem)

Updated on December 20, 2014

A tale unfolds of lovers true

Who met to cross a river blue

And heaven watched and heaven sighed

As once more couple there did meet

An ageless custom to repeat

-

To test how strong their love might be

They’ll walk to meet their destiny

And heaven’s wish was at their side

He took her hand in peril’s view

A final kiss their love renew

-

They entered water felt its strain

To try the trust these two maintain

And heaven’s hope now opened wide

As couple progressed cautiously

To press ahead or turn and flee

-

There in the strength of river’s flow

Where naked truth began to show

And heaven held as love was tried

His hold on love began to wane

Her footing she could not regain

-

Was there a love which once was sweet

Had met a fate it would not beat

And heaven watched and heaven cried

When finally he let her go

A tale of Joy or one of woe

Wow - very interesting as the reader's heart is so deeply touched by the symbolical river and the endless currents found throughout the struggle we call life.

      Sad but beautiful.

Wonderfully crafted. Up and beautiful...heartbreaking.... I have a music background like you and ended up teaching special ed. I had an art degree and use that for book covers and in the teaching I did too. We have similar backgrounds and both ended up writing, another creative outlet.

Letting her go was sad and you have an excellent way of expressing poetry

Mh, I know you have experienced great loss in your lifetime (from reading some of your comments), and that is how I am interpreting this sad, yet beautiful poem here . . . maybe as to knowing of letting go eventually after suffering the loss of a loved one, but still cherish them in your memories. May be way off on this one.

God bless. In His Love, Faith Reaper

My goodness, but what foolish lovers! Testing their love by walking into the deep, strongly flowing river?

Cleverly crafted, imaginative poem, Mhatter. Good rhyme and meter too. Voted up and interesting.
