Things don't always work out the way you imagined they would - A Poem

Things don't always work out the way you imagined they would.

In my mind I had fireworks.

I got a sparkler that wouldn't light.

I had imagined thunderstorms.

But my neighbour just turned on his bathroom light.

In my mind I had shooting stars.

I got one ambling satellite.

I had imagined the aurora borealis!

What I saw was a search light.

I had a picture of Picasso meets Van Gogh.

I got a handprint taped to the fridge door.

I imagined a castle in the tree tops

But it was only like an inch from the floor.

In my mind I had a modern classic.

I got badly written fan fiction.

I had imagined the greatest adventures, big and small!

... I got grounded...

So I sat alone and I closed my eyes.

The days turned to weeks, to months at a time.

But then, when I wasn't even looking,

I got roller coasters and stage dives,

Bungee jumps and scuba dives.

I got the rainbow colours of the ocean.

I got the pricks of light in the deep night sky.

I go that beautiful post-rainfall smell,

The picture perfect sunrise,

The sound of children playing in the street,

The warmth and comfort of home.

I got a dog trained to close the door behind him,

Fortune growing on trees,

Christmas dinner on halloween,

Pudding before breakfast,

Soft towels freshly cleaned.

I got the snow and the sun.

I got the eagle and the dove.

When I wasn't even looking, I got love.

Because things don't always work out the way you imagined they would.

      Hi amynaylor.

Such a wonderful journey your poem led me through; No regrets, but delectation, even after opening my eyes.( Moments of amusements after reading / closed eyes.) Though things don't always work out the way " you" ( me ) imagined they would- they still work-out, they DO.

      Voted up and beautiful.

What a wonderful poem. I felt an array of emotions as I read your poem and in the end, I was overtaken by a sense of wholeness, acceptance, and joy. I will return to your poem when I need to balance my expectations, as they often go astray. Thank you!

Thank you Catherine, these are just a few of my lucky shots from over the past few years. If you take enough photos, you eventually end up with one that's half decent! Haha

Thank you very much. Rhyming isn't everything, you don't always need a good rhyme to express a good story. Just the words and the emotions to tell. :-)

I really admire the way you rhyme with poems and its just so captivating how you finally express your imagination and thoughts with words. Rhyming is something I've found really difficult when I write poems
