A Christmas Poem for My Husband

My husband and I knew each other in the late 1970's and then lost track of each other for 27 years. After dating for a few years, and then marrying, but living in separate houses rather than pull my children out of their neighborhood and schools, we were finally able to share the same home in 2012. For as long as I can remember, I have loved Christmas. I try to keep Christmas in my heart all year long.

I wrote this poem the first year we were actually living under the same roof together as husband and wife because I was so excited about getting to share the whole Christmas season with him, which included decorating our home for Christmas.

This Christmas Will be Different

Christmas will soon be upon us

With all its gaily wrapped packages

Bright with red and green bows.

Wreaths of freshly scented greens

Will hang on all the doors.

The twinkle of Christmas tree lights

Colored, just for you

Will shine from the tree.

Visions of sugar plums will dance in our dreams.

And the remembrance of the birth

Of one little baby

So many years ago, will be in our hearts.

But this Christmas, amidst all

The hustle and bustle of shoppers,

Amidst all the shoveling of snow

Off the walks and driveway, and the

Scraping of ice off the car windows,

Amidst all the baking of

Many, many Christmas cookies

It will all be different.

I will ignore all the pressure

Ignore all the commercialized hype,

And ignore that nagging feeling

That I will never finish wrapping presents.

Ah yes, I will enjoy this Christmas

More than ever

And my heart will be singing

Because this Christmas will be different,

This Christmas will be special,

This Christmas, I'll be with you!

We always put our Christmas tree in the corner of the living room.

      hawaiianodysseus,

LOL...well you seem pretty excited about my trip so I guess it will be a worthwhile excursion. I definitely plan on bringing my camera. I don't know much about Hawaii, having never been before, but the cruise ship is stopping at 4 ports there. My husband has been to Hawaii a few times before and loves it and can't wait to show it to me.

OMG! You're going to Kaua'i? I didn't know that! I mean, I knew you were going to the islands...but Kaua'i? Oh, look out, Jurassic Park!

Yes, by all means, go to Waimea Canyon! And, Karen, take a lot of notes and pictures because I want you to write several Hubs about the experience.

Good for you and hubby! I'm hoping to go in April when Mom turns 80!

      Hawaiianodysseus,

Glad to help any time I can. And from what I hear, now is a good time to start publishing holiday hubs because they need time to get picked up by Google in time for when people are searching the internet for Christmas articles and stories. Speaking of Waimea Canyon, we are going there on our upcoming vacation. We have a cruise excursion booked for there. Do you recommend it? It looks beautiful in the pictures.

Karen, I'm smiling because I hear you loud and clear with the wonderful idea(s). Between you and Chris, one need never worry about being stranded on an iceberg somewhere. : ) Seriously, I definitely feel good about being part of the loop.

Frigid cold on Kaua'i was 40 degrees up in the mountainous approach to our version of the Grand Canyon, Waimea Canyon.

In contrast, when I first stepped out from the plane on my very first trip to the mainland back in September of 1970, I was freezing at 47 degrees...although I was fascinated with the frost "painted" by every exhalation.

Just a few years later, I was running in eastern Washington in shorts and thermals at -15 degrees. Ah, the human body is so adaptible...when you're young, that is! Ha-ha!

Christmas is beautiful no matter what the temperature. I have a treasure chest of great memories in either state. Glad you asked--it triggered some ideas, if not for the Ten Hubs challenge, then certainly for the holidays. : )

      Hawaiianodysseus,

Glad you enjoy being in the loop! I bet Christmas in Washington is very different than Christmas in Hawaii??? For one thing, isn't it colder where you are now? How does that compare to Christmases in Hawaii? I am sure it would make a wonderful subject for a hub!!! Just trying to help... :0)

Heartwarming and delightful, Karen, and appropriately timed as the days grow shorter and the nights grow colder. I'm in the mood for Christmas music and the wonderful spirit of it all.

One added thought--having read several of your Hubs, it's really neat to be "in" on the special someone for whom this poem was written.

      chrisinhawaii,

Maybe if you start playing some Christmas music, it will spark some new hubs? I used to always start playing Christmas music in August or September. By the way, here's an idea for a hub for you...what's Christmas like in Hawaii? Obviously there's no snow. I have grown up and always lived in CT. We have cold air, sometimes snow, hot chocolate after neighborhood Christmas caroling, hot cider at parties, etc. What's it like there? I am sure it's different. Can anyone get a live pine tree or do you use artificial ones or palm trees? Just an idea...

That's a good idea Lizam1. I am not sure I could be that noble. I do love the surprise of at least a few presents...giving and getting! But good for you.

Lovely Karen. It really is about the people and not all the stuff. This year we are by passing presents, saving for a trip somewhere and making a financial donation to our local food bank.
