This Christmas Will Be Different
A Christmas Poem for My Husband
My husband and I knew each other in the late 1970's and then lost track of each other for 27 years. After dating for a few years, and then marrying, but living in separate houses rather than pull my children out of their neighborhood and schools, we were finally able to share the same home in 2012. For as long as I can remember, I have loved Christmas. I try to keep Christmas in my heart all year long.
I wrote this poem the first year we were actually living under the same roof together as husband and wife because I was so excited about getting to share the whole Christmas season with him, which included decorating our home for Christmas.
This Christmas Will be Different
Christmas will soon be upon us
With all its gaily wrapped packages
Bright with red and green bows.
Wreaths of freshly scented greens
Will hang on all the doors.
The twinkle of Christmas tree lights
Colored, just for you
Will shine from the tree.
Visions of sugar plums will dance in our dreams.
And the remembrance of the birth
Of one little baby
So many years ago, will be in our hearts.
But this Christmas, amidst all
The hustle and bustle of shoppers,
Amidst all the shoveling of snow
Off the walks and driveway, and the
Scraping of ice off the car windows,
Amidst all the baking of
Many, many Christmas cookies
It will all be different.
I will ignore all the pressure
Ignore all the commercialized hype,
And ignore that nagging feeling
That I will never finish wrapping presents.
Ah yes, I will enjoy this Christmas
More than ever
And my heart will be singing
Because this Christmas will be different,
This Christmas will be special,
This Christmas, I'll be with you!
