To My Wife, While I Have the Chance
Time doesn't always work in our favor. None of us know the date or time that we shall put this world behind us. Before this happens, my wife, I need to say some things to you....
Has it really been so many years that have passed us by
since we stated those two little words that now
awaken me and makes me ask, "Where has the time gone?"
I was drunk that night, still from my bachelor party.
Bacardi 151 had decided to remain awhile.
if only we could postpone one night and I was myself
I shuffled along to the minister I was barely able to see
those people, recognizing my inebriated state
simply smiled and whispered, "Yes, he's a rock DJ."
Then you appeared sobering my mind and entering my life
exchanging lifelong vows and tiny circles of gold
we walked away not as two together, but as one forever.
The rest is a blur even though I know it happened
life being much fuller with you by my side
through all the good and the bad, it's been a journey.
We watched the kids grow up and create new lives
that will forever continue the laughter
that we attempted to provide them in their youth.
From career to career, city to city, friend to friend
never complaining, but instead, you simply
picked up your life and made a new home for us to live.
You've been my friend and my foe as we sometimes
loved and sometimes fought, we always compromised
in the end as solo victory would only have been our defeat.
When my heart decided to battle my survival, I awoke to see your
eyes looking down into mine, so worried and tired
yet, clinging to my soul, not willing to let the reaper gather his crop.
If I've never said how much you mean to me, let me do so now
for even though we depend on another day arriving,
nothing is promised for those with bodies that do as they wish.
Soul mate, ah, that is too insignificant, too minor a phrase
for one whose life has provided my reason for being
my complete and unmitigated existence heightened by your touch.
Should the world end tomorrow, or even something less tragic,
if I should no longer be around to see your smile
you must be aware of these things in my mind for I hide no secrets.
Every time I hold you reminds me of the first evening we met
and each time we kiss transcends all time and events passed
my love will never die, but become part of each day's rising sun.
It is with this thought I repeat the two words that meant so much
and take so little effort to speak
I Do!
And will forever.
