To My Wife, While I Have the Chance

Updated on May 6, 2017
Source

Time doesn't always work in our favor. None of us know the date or time that we shall put this world behind us. Before this happens, my wife, I need to say some things to you....

Has it really been so many years that have passed us by

since we stated those two little words that now

awaken me and makes me ask, "Where has the time gone?"

I was drunk that night, still from my bachelor party.

Bacardi 151 had decided to remain awhile.

if only we could postpone one night and I was myself

I shuffled along to the minister I was barely able to see

those people, recognizing my inebriated state

simply smiled and whispered, "Yes, he's a rock DJ."

Then you appeared sobering my mind and entering my life

exchanging lifelong vows and tiny circles of gold

we walked away not as two together, but as one forever.

The rest is a blur even though I know it happened

life being much fuller with you by my side

through all the good and the bad, it's been a journey.

Source

We watched the kids grow up and create new lives

that will forever continue the laughter

that we attempted to provide them in their youth.

From career to career, city to city, friend to friend

never complaining, but instead, you simply

picked up your life and made a new home for us to live.

You've been my friend and my foe as we sometimes

loved and sometimes fought, we always compromised

in the end as solo victory would only have been our defeat.

When my heart decided to battle my survival, I awoke to see your

eyes looking down into mine, so worried and tired

yet, clinging to my soul, not willing to let the reaper gather his crop.

If I've never said how much you mean to me, let me do so now

for even though we depend on another day arriving,

nothing is promised for those with bodies that do as they wish.

Source

Soul mate, ah, that is too insignificant, too minor a phrase

for one whose life has provided my reason for being

my complete and unmitigated existence heightened by your touch.

Should the world end tomorrow, or even something less tragic,

if I should no longer be around to see your smile

you must be aware of these things in my mind for I hide no secrets.

Every time I hold you reminds me of the first evening we met

and each time we kiss transcends all time and events passed

my love will never die, but become part of each day's rising sun.

It is with this thought I repeat the two words that meant so much

and take so little effort to speak

I Do!

And will forever.

Like others have said, this is a very beautiful tribute to your wife and your relationship with her. It's nice to be reminded every once in a while that love like this exists, even in the rocky times. It's one of those things that lasts through the ages and it's wonderful to know that years ago and years from now there will be people that are lucky enough to find this. Amazing and beautiful :)

How easy it is to journey on - only to forget to pay tribute to our nearest and dearest. This is just the best - so beautifully expressed -I admire the way you touch on - 'friend and foe'- 'loved and fought,' - the honesty shines through. No, the journey isn't always easy, but sharing that journey, the tough times, the bad times is the best. I do identify. And who said love poems were for the young? Makes me a bit teary in the best way. Very best wishes to you and your wife -

I haven't said this yet, but here goes! I truly believe the key to living together for many, many years is to stop looking at what's not in front of you, and start seeing what is! There's always going to be someone more attractive or more intellectually pleasing. So what! When you've got someone that loves you and is willing to do anything for you, it's stupid to look elsewhere.

I feel like we've met before. lol

This actually came very easily. It came straight from the heart and needed only minimal editing.

Thanks so much for visiting my hubs today! Very much appreciated!

What a beautiful tribute to the love of your life...I envy you. My husband died in 2005. Today would have been our anniversary. He died Oct 1 2005. This time of year is always difficult for me and I do write about our love and his journey to death. (August Poetry and Journey towards Death). I know he knows how much I loved him before he passed, but I sure do miss him! Thanks for sharing the woman who means so much to you. Rated up/B

      Denise -

So good of you to visit here.

Sorry to hear of your husband's passing. I honestly don't know if I could survive if I didn't have my wife by my side. I admire your strength on this day I know is so difficult. I can tell you that if it were me, I would want you to remember the good times we shared and how we never had to say a word to know how the other cared. I know he also wants to see the smile that meant so much to him. So, please smile for him.

Thanks so much for your kind words! Many Thanks!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww! RC has a soft, gooey center! :) What a sicky sweet lovey dovey poem to your wife!

Seriously, that should get you some bonus points. Nicely done. You are a poet like no other. :)

Good of you to visit here again!

I come back to this one from time to time... either to answer comments or to let my wife see it again... upon her request. Funny how something so quickly wrote can mean so much to a person.

      Thanks for sharing! Greatly Appreciated!

Oh, Richard. Between reading this lovely poem to your wife, and trying to write my sad new Hub about our Shih Tzu dying, I am boo-hooing. Your wife is one lucky gal to have a love like yours. I'm sure she knows it, too.

I voted this UP, will share and Pin.

Please, read one of my comedy hubs and start smiling! : )

I'm really the lucky one. My wife is more than I could've ever hoped for. I don't know how it's possible, but I recognize that more and more each time I'm with her. I want to read your new hub and will do so! Please give me a little time. I wading in over 400 emails right now.

      Thanks for commenting! Many Thanks!

Return visit for me Rich - this is lovely, sincere, beautiful - it is a shame that HP is not encouraging more poetry writing but alas, it does have a short shelf life. Glad I called back :o)

      Good to see you back!

I actually think I'm going to make another blog for poetry. If I eliminated my mid 60's scoring poetry hubs here, my hub score would skyrocket. Glad you enjoyed this. Many Thanks!
