To all the boys

To All The Boys

If anything, I am an oxymoron, an accurate estimate of what once was, what will always be

I dedicate this dark victory to all the boys I have loved before

From the ones expected to those I never suspected for even one minute

To the sons I love best, who suckled the evaporated milk from my maternal breasts

To the cousins who teased me with jest, were battle ready and now have balding hair

To the boy in first grade, who others made fun of, remember how I, the little giant stood beside you

Threatening to dethrone any kid who said another cruel word or threw another jagged rock

To all the boys who stood on their heads just to get my attention

Or who showed me how to tie a loose knot

Knew how to hold me while letting me go

To the one who shoved his fist in the tree

To the one who said he would always wait for me

Who could not have been more perfect

I dedicate this dark victory to all the boys I have loved before

From the Hell’s Angel to the hopeful pessimist

To the one who followed martial law

to the one who did not know any way other than the ways of the honest crook

I will never forget you

Even as your hairlines recede,

guts no longer disguise your taste for beer

or smiles light up your faces when I remind you of the first days we met

I dedicate this dark victory

This roaring silence,

Thinking out loud

Bitter sweetness to the gone but not forgotten

All the boys who sang me songs

who had special ways of making me laugh

who I knew would be friends for life

This song is for you

This wise fool will never stop loving you

will never ever forget how you held me

when I needed holding the most

Kim: This poem moved me to tears. This is a beautiful tribute to all the boys in your life. I love the Willie Nelson song and your poem is just as beautiful as the song. I so enjoyed reading this poem and it reminded me of 'all the boys' in my life also. Lovely!

      Dear Kim,

Forgive my lateness in commenting to your beautiful tribute to all the boys in your life! My Internet has been down since Friday.

You have captured your relationship with the boys in your life so beautifully in your poem. I really enjoyed reading it and the wonderful music and photos as well.

      Up and more and away

Hugs and much love to you and the boys in your life.

      Dear Faith,

No apologies necessary. I certainly can relate to the contrariness of the net. Thank you for all of your kind words. Hugs to all the boys in your life, too.

      Love Always,

      Kim

Beautiful work, Kim. I regret never having dipped your pigtail in he inkwell. :)

Kim, as a teacher I see boys behaving strangely at times in front of girls. All to attract their attention; standing on hands, telling silly jokes, making strange sounds, and so on. Your words reminded me of this and how we later appreciate those innocent first impressions from boys.

      WOW . . .ocfireflies!

Do you know what style of poetry this edges upon? Abstract/Prose! I thought I was the only one on HP who did that. Thank God I found you. This was so the type of poetry that I love and write if I am in depression at the time. Honest. No Joke.

"Losing her . . ." "And Old Dreamer's Dream" and "Dangerous Sheep," are only three of my hubs like this.

I voted up and away on this and would again and again.

I am so impressed with your work.

"Please," check my work and then follow me. I would love that.

      Sincerely,

      Kenneth Avery, Hamilton, Al.

      Wayne,

I am thinking perhaps you did dip my pigtail in the inkwell. That could potentially explain why I am so lopsided. : )

      Teaches12345,

I can remember being told that when a boy was annoying me that really meant he liked me. Smiles. Hope you are well.

      mylindaelliott,

      So glad you could relate.

      Kenneth Avery,

I will definitely check out your Abstract/Prose--glad to finally have a name for what it is that I write. You have made my day. Thank You. Thank You for super kind words. Please consider yourself followed.

Also, please know how much I enjoyed your piece on the outhouse and commenting on it as well.

To All, please forgive me for taking so long to respond and know how much I appreciate all of you. Each time I get back in my hub groove, life takes over and I find myself once again attempting to re-groove. Love to all.
