If anything, I am an oxymoron, an accurate estimate of what once was, what will always be
I dedicate this dark victory to all the boys I have loved before
From the ones expected to those I never suspected for even one minute
To the sons I love best, who suckled the evaporated milk from my maternal breasts
To the cousins who teased me with jest, were battle ready and now have balding hair
To the boy in first grade, who others made fun of, remember how I, the little giant stood beside you
Threatening to dethrone any kid who said another cruel word or threw another jagged rock
To all the boys who stood on their heads just to get my attention
Or who showed me how to tie a loose knot
Knew how to hold me while letting me go
To the one who shoved his fist in the tree
To the one who said he would always wait for me
Who could not have been more perfect
