Voice of the Minstrel, a Poem
When I was a sophomore in college, a guy I was crazy about dumped me. I was having a hard time dealing with the breakup, and when a friend asked me to drive with her from Connecticut to Henniker, New Hampshire to visit a friend of hers at her college, I jumped at the chance. It was a wonderful weekend filled with friends, good food, and nights sitting in a living room by the fire listening to this one guy sing and play his guitar. The magic of the woods all around, and this man's healing voice did wonders for my broken heart, and so I am sharing a poem I wrote after the weekend ended...
While running away
From shattered dreams and
The cracked mirror of reality,
I met a smiling minstrel
Whose voice of golden velvet
Encircled my heart
And brought it to a land
Of forest like tranquility
Where fairies play happily
Under toadstools,
And unicorns eat gleaming magic grass
In fields of sunshine.
I stayed in awesome wonder
Till the voice of the minstrel
Grew wearily silent
And while not wanting to part company,
I knew the time had come.
So I bid him good-bye
And started back alone
Along the long journey back.
But soon I realized I was not alone at all.
For the voice of the minstrel
Had unknowingly left
Hope in my heart and
A smile imprinted upon my soul.
And it gave my heart the courage
To attempt to piece the jagged fragments
Back together.
