What I've learned about cats!

Updated on April 6, 2014
Ella | Source

I have learned that just about every expression or phrase you have heard about cats are true and are illustrated on a daily basis! You can check out my source of this knowledge by following this link.

For Example:

scaredy cat....don't they jump at every sound?!

cat walks in the room, nudges another....boom, hiss, fight!

let the cat out of the bag....this one is by far my favorite....with 4 kitty cats in my house, I get the most mileage out of this one!

curiosity killed the cat...another funny one in my house where someone is always getting into trouble because they are poking their nose where it doesn't belong.

"Time spent with cats is never wasted."~Sigmund Freud

something the cat dragged in....reminds me of the night I came home to find a headless bird on my bedroom floor....thank you, Izzy!

and she looking like the cat that ate the canary....again, Izzy expecting a thank you from me....

....and Phoebe grinning like a chesire cat beause she knew I'd freak out....which started a cat fight that caused both of them to take out their claws

"There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats."~Albert Schweitzer

Our 2 newest babes think they are the cat's pajamas when they are snug as bugs in my covers and the big girls think they are the cat's meow when they run around the house talking to us

but none can be sweeter or more loving than anyone is after the even the shortest catnap

"I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become it's visible soul."~Jean Cocteau

A very important sidenote

All of our cats are rescue cats. The statistics on stray cats and dogs are phenomanal. I would beg anyone who has room in their heart and home to adopt rather than buy a pet. I have included a link to the ASPCA. The statistics are frightening. My last 2 babies were adopted through a friend. These are from a family of cats that she has been feeding for over a year. Sadly, they continue to multiply as attempts are made to trap and spay/nueter the older cats and find homes for the little ones. Finnick and Ella were 2 of 4 kitten litter. their mother has been spayed and sent back out with her family. Their siblings were adopted together and I can only imagine how much pleasure their new owners are having because I had the opportunity to meet and play with them also! Kudos to my friend Jackie and her friend Mona who have helped hundreds of cats find homes and brought hundreds of people unconditional love!

My Muse

When the cats away, the mice will play holds a different meaning for my Phoebe. When the cat lays on the mouse, Randi can't type! So, I changed that one: When the mouse is covered and away, Phoebe gets mommy to play. Or.. a good nap!

Phoebe sleeping on my mouse!

Please consider this

Now that the holidays are here, people often buy a new kitty or puppy as a Christmas gift. I wanted to throw out a few words of caution here. Please don't buy them unless you are certain the recipient wants them and is equiped to deal with them. Don't bring a fish without a bowl, a kitty without a litter box, or a hamster without a cage, especially on Christmas day. When I was about 10, I received a gerbil as a birthday gift. While I was somewhat excited, my parents were clearly not. My classroom received a great class pet that year! Also, unless you are breeding or showing your pets, please consider adoption. There are so many homeless animals out there! Even if you are seeking a specific breed, you can probably find websites dedicated to the rescue and subsequent adoption of these pets.

Cat got your tongue? Even though I am allergic to them, I have a soft spots for cats and will often stop to pet them in my travels even though I know my eyes will get puffy and itchy afterward. Cats seem to take a liking to me as well because I speak to them sweetly and gently, something that seems to always work on cats but rarely on dogs. Great hub!

Thank you, FlourishAnyway! I so appreciate your great ideas! While I, personally, am not in a position to trap, I have been a part of seeing the process. I now have number 5 outside. He is a sweet boy and I am planning on getting him neutered soon. I love all my once-feral babies and revel in their personality difference

Gorgeous pictures of those kitties. Love that funny one with the cat cone on your kitty's head after surgery. As for tips for trapping your friend's ferals, I have a lot of experience with that and can recommend a few things for your friends if they want to hear them: withhold food a day or two before trapping, get a dark sheet and leave it outside for a few days so it will lose its human (laundry detergent) scent, cover the trap in the dark sheet, use as bait stinky tuna in oil or Kentucky Fried Chicken regular recipe (take the bones out). I've Trapped/Neutered/Returned hundreds. Bless you for adopting these once-feral babies and giving them a chance -- and for promoting adoption from the shelters.

Marie. So sad when we lose our pets. They are so much a part of the family. My little ones are my babies but I must admit, 4 at one time is a bit much! I'll be joining you in the grandma department this spring with the birth of my first grandbaby. Thank you for reading and your comments! Randi

I've had dogs and cats and now I have grandchildren. When I buried my last cat after she was killed by a motorbike, I decided to spare myself the horrible, painful grief caused by the death of a pet. But if I ever again yield to the temptation to adore a pet, it would be a kitten. I can see more of myself in cats than in dogs.

Thanks for sharing the combing story. None of ours does that but Fin like to sleep in the sink (a new habit) and Izzy follows us aroiund, whining crying and biting to get us to pet her! Thanks for your vote. I am looking forward to checking out your hubs! Enjoy those kitties!

Thank you, PegCole for stopping by and reading! Yes, all of mine are rescues and the 2 little ones are feral. I know very little background on the one who brought me the bird except that she was almost 2 when we adopted her and she was terribly afraid of her own shadow. Poor baby! All, thankfully are spayed and neutered and most definitely run our house! So nice to see you here!

This is so cute. We have a cat that looks just like your first cat except that he is now grown. He loves to be combed in fact he insist on it. I have wanted to take film of him being combed. The only problem he will only let us comb him while we're on the toilet. He lays down in front of the toilet and has us comb him. If he's not combed everyday he whins.

      Voted up on your hub.

These pictures are awesome and really illustrate the sayings we all have used about cats. Recently I've been adopted by 3 feral cats who now run my schedule. I'm still trying to win the confidence of Ms. Kitty who needs to be spayed, the sooner the better. Loved this one, in particular, the picture about the headless bird. A treasured gift to you!

...well you knew that just sooner or later I would show up here because my two best friends are cats - Little Miss Tiffy who was my mum's cat and she is now a healthy 18 years old and still a fountain of youth.

Mister Gabriel is my adopted cat and he is deaf but loves walking on his leash and when we get down to the beach I take it off him and let run or walk freely which he loves - quite a sight - a man and his cat walking side by side by the shoreline of the lake - and an indelible image and precious moment to be cherished.

sending you warm wishes from a sunny lake today with no wind at lake erie time 12:09pm and thank you for all of the nice cat quotes and thoughts

What a Wonderful, Refreshing Hub on Cats...I could feel the Love.

My niece presented to my Sister, one small kitten, who must have been 1 1/2 wks old. She had been abandon by the mother cat outside. My sister looked at this kitten, who's eyes were not opened yet...and fed and bottle nursed her to the Adorable kitten she has today.

Well, I talked with the person handling the neutering and she suggested wait till he has a few more pounds. They will also provide the rabies shots for free. It is through the PAWS association and cost a mere $20 / cat. I am so impressed with them. They were very kind and informative (and patient with all of my hovering and fussing). Both cats are doing well and seemed to bounce back much quicker than I had anticipated.

My housemate is a stray kitten magnet--this is NOT the first time we've gone through the, "look what followed me home" situation. A few years ago we had six in our house and managed to find homes for all of them. Then my nephew and his dog came to live with us and that started a whole new set of problems! LOL (teenagers...)

@Denise. Good for you! Within 6 months 3 cats and I thought my 4 cats in 4 years was fast! I hope your big ones are feeling better. For the record, if you didn't know, as long as your little one is 3 months, you can have him neutered now, a much easier procedure. Thanks for reading and rating!

Hahaha I love this hub. I've always been more a dog person than cat person-left that to my sister. But, since we were adopted by two stray cats six months ago I cannot imagine our house without them. Their names are (female) Raisin and (male) TC Tiger for Tomcat Tiger. Tom for short. He is ALL boy. Well, not quite. We just had him and Raisin fixed today, haha poor things.

And, since that was going soooo well, we added a third kitten to the kaboodle 2 weeks ago. He's about 8 wks old now and he is all black. His name is Taz-short for Tazmanian Devil.

Great hub-rated up and all the way across...sharing.

I never really 'got' cats until my son and his girlfriend lived with me for 3 months while their house was being renovated..

I find Mau-Mau to be quite independent, even though he lets us know he is dependent on food being where it should be and in plentiful supply, that we should add the right amount of his vitamins and minerals to the food, that his water should be fresh, that access to the great outdoors is expected on demand, and that there is a time when he is allowed to watch TV in the crook of my arm. All of that does not include his instant medical care, daily washcloth baths, and frequent "Welcome Home brushings."

I have a confession to make....I am not a cat person! There, I've said it....I am so sorry! Having admitted that character defect, let me go on to say that cats love me, and won't leave me alone. No matter where I go, cats will always come to me and hop in my lap....not Bev's lap (Bev adores cats) but my lap. Our cat, Lucy, who is fifteen years old, follows me around the house. LOL What's up with that?

Sigh! I am destined to be a cat person, but I am resisting. :)

You did a wonderful job with this hub; your hubs looks so much better than they did when you first started out. Great job!
