When In Slumber
I watched as you drift off to sleep
Your sensuous mouth opens slightly to expel breath
The slight pursing of full lips
strong shoulders now relaxed in complete trust
A smile dimples your otherwise masculine features
I gently brush hands across angular face
Even in sleep recognition
As subconsciously you reach for feminine hands tiny in comparison
Curling it gently across your chest, never waking
And in that instant, love, more complete
I watch as you in deepest slumber, restless
R.E.M.
The parting of your lips again as you inhale
cotton sheets cover masculine form
My hands still held tightly against smooth skin
As off to sleep, I drift
And I in wonderment question, how in sleep your heart exposed
It is in these hours between wakefulness and sleep
awareness of how you pretend
Your casual play of strength you show in wakefulness
But here in this time you are far weaker than I
I'm comforted by the thought
You in sleep show your true self
A vulnerability not shown while awake
As I drift sleep forcing heavy lids to close
I sigh in contentment I am loved
The gentle warming light beckons through open windows
I run my hand across cooling sheets searching for you
Shy now awareness, here in the glow of early morning
Meeting eyes filled with laughter
I lowering shadowed ones
Laughter mimics as eyes leery looks for confirmation
A whispered endearment, a gentle kiss
Reverts me to weakened form
"Woman, you are beautiful in slumber".
