Why is poetry important to you?

Updated on March 14, 2009

Expressing the Soul

Poetry is how a person expresses their inner heart in an attempt to connect to other human beings. In my eyes there is s significant difference between some one saying "this is something I wrote" and this is a "poem".  A poem is a great way to send a message to a diverse audience without having to be as detailed as prose.

From an academic perspective:

“Poem (Po-em) n. A verbal composition characterized by the use of condensed language chosen for its sound and suggestive power and by the use of literary techniques such as meter and metaphor. [<Gk. Poiema, a creation]” pg639 The American Heritage Dictionary, Third edition

“Song n.  1.a. A brief composition written for singing. B. The act or art of singing… 2. A melodious utterance… 3.a. Poetry A lyric poem…” pg778 The American Heritage Dictionary, Third edition

I see poetry as a creation that requires a tremendous amount of mental and emotional energy to project the vision in the heart and mind of the reader as it is inspired within the author. As a poet, I know how clear my mind has to be to organize the message and idea in a pleasing for for my reader.

I see poetry as a means to give other people pleasure by showing a person how much you appreciate them by taking the time to write your feeling out for them.  In these days people are so fast with text messages and emails, a poem from a loved one now should have significantly more value.  From personal experience, I enjoy the appreciation that people show me when I share my poetry with them because they know my intention is to remind them that they are special as a person and special to me.

Poetry is important to me because my dream is to be the greatest poet for peace and love in this generation. Traveling around the world reading poems and having people applaud after each one. Being able to help other people by inspiring them to go after their dreams and goals. Life is about trying to live the dream and being the greatest love and peace poet would make my dream come true.  We will see what happens.

Thanks for your time

Poetry is the name of expressing someone's views, thoughts and imaginations in such a manner which attracts people to itself and force them to read it.

Poetry is also a source of expressing someone's strong feelings and emotions either sad or joyful.

Writing is the one of the best cathartic releases that I know of… It has always been a passion to me. Poetry is something that is very new to me. I do believe that in time I will improve, especially if I were to read or take a class on it. I was curious how long the average person take to work on a poem. Also, I am confused by the classifications of the poems themselves. I have been categorizing mine as narrative or dramatic because they seem to be the most suitable. I would really appreciate it if anyone has any suggestions. Thank you so much! Sincerely, Raina

I think one of the greatest things about poetry is it's flexibility - it can be simple, or amazingly complex, but for the most part both extremes can get across very strong points and emotions. When we can make someone think of something from a different perspective from their norm, it gives us a certain strength - the ability to impact someone else.

Writing a poem for someone - not about them, but for them - thats a beautiful gift to give. Thank you.

Thank you for answering my request with thought and feeling, even as one might write a poem.
