You Can't Always Get What You Want

Updated on September 25, 2012

Can Ya?
Can Ya? | Source

Proven all too often - fools reach far beyond their grasp,

Pretty lips speak words distracting - leaves one breathless and aghast!

True destiny now silent, displeasure thinly veiled,

We thought that we deserved it all - how miserably we failed!

With masses busy choking - all but gagging on their greed,

No thought of any difference between wanting it - and need!

When society can't be civil - human nature's stripped clean bare,

With everyone out for Number One - nobody's got a prayer!

Do Unto Others?

Karma Kind and Color Blind
Karma Kind and Color Blind | Source

Do unto others? A complete waste of time,

Hours best focused on Me, Me - and Mine!

Delaying gratification, the earning of praise?

Sentimental slop in The Internet Age!

Manners, compassion, honor and trust?

Ignored by our role-models - who jeer with disgust!

Engorged on self-worth - we seek fortune and fame,

Say anything, do anything - there's really no shame!

Hunkered down in my safe spot - the chaos insane,

With Karma kind, and color blind - no desire to cause pain!

Trust's window now barred - naivety scarred - yet still feisty if not downright tough,

Cause learning's what living is all about - I will never get enough!

I didn't know you were gone, but I welcome you back! You have rhymed out words that hold meanings for all dependent on where one stands, I think the strike of them will vary. I find them quite interesting and useful, worthy of multiple reading in variable light that finds them shining no matter the intensity one chooses to see. I was forced by morals to vote it up, well deserving is all I can find that is fair.

I've placed you and Maureen on my prayer list and with my mustard seed and two more perhaps the Blessing we seek will be found. I don't know what is sought by those close, I'll pray for Peace and comfort and all brought into the fold of the promise of an easy yoke and light burden until life eternal. where we will all have the chance to meet and all the time to know one another in full and truth.

      May the Blessings Be,

      50

Preach on, Sister! Preach on! That about sums it up in the poetical sense with regard to our world today. We lose our moral and our character when we seek to take with contributing and to steal from others. Certainly we should enjoy the spoils of our own success but not at the expense of walking over other people to get there. If there is anything this nation has lost in my lifetime, it is ability to take pride in ourselves, work hard, and aspire to a higher station. Too many have traded that goal for just a place in the free cheese line thanks to a government that is slowly crippling us. Good Write!~WB

Congrats on writing a truly powerful thought provoking poem. My favourite lines are "sentimental slop in the internet age." and "say anything do anything - there's really no shame." It conjures up images of charlatons canvassing online for dodgy charities and politicians and celebs cashing in on their infamy.

You have inspired me to stop writing whimsical nonsense hubs and try to write with more purpose . Voted up and I really think there should be a category "thought provoking" or something similar.

This gives me a lot to think about - am I greedy? Sadly and stupidly I do see a little of myself in your poem. I like to think I am only greedy with what I have because it is not much. But who is to say I wouldnt continue my practices if I had true wealth? Eh, who am I kidding? If I had the money I would just give it all away.

      Hi Leslie!

Honestly, poetry and I have a love/hate relationship. This hub and especially the last line..."Cause learning's what living is all about - I will never get enough!" - is my raison d'etre!

I didn't know you were away, (please accept my apology) but...I am very, very glad you're back!

      For Maureen:

I am sending new chi. I am extracting the energy that no longer serves her and will replace it with relaxing energy that flows and what flows with it is the peace of a grateful heart always beating in rhythm and in perfect alignment with the source of all being!

      For Maureen...

I will cradle your beating heart

      inside my warmest hands

      I will carry you anywhere

until the time you can stand

I will tend the hours beside you

      until you awaken and know

That the same blood that flows

between our veins will forever flow

      For now.... sleep my dear

      my hands upon your face

The hope that moves earth and sky

      is healing you in place

And when this day is over

and you walk beside me again

Know that our hearts are joined

and will be till the end

      Our souls are all entwining

yet there's no touching in plain view

Only the spirits of healing lying

side by side ....right beside you

This great piece has a smack of my "Rippled Faces" I penned last year and you as well kindly left me a comment. Yes indeed I feel revolution in the air. The super power may tumble, the blindfold is still on the scale of justice while the statue of LIBERTY cries in pain for all our forefathers who sailed past her majesty to see what has become of the present generation.

It's a mad mad mad world out there, moral values THERE ARE NONE the laws of man have been changed, everything and anything goes, accept it as our tonic. Politicians of the world are making their own laws to suit their greed while we bleed in the streets with no class status at all.

Your either RICH or POOR there is no in between. I pray for all mankind, but it may just be to dam late. My prayers go out to your cousin in need of them for the meek shall prevail and your cousin shall heal. Peace and blessings my talented scribe.

Fabulous poem... worrisome... for you, but life's disappointments just make you stronger as the poem shows, and your ability to voice political thought powerfully has multiplied 10 fold.

I love how your friends and community are supporting Maureen...

Hi Missy L. glad to see you back and writing! I Love your poem!!! So much energy within you fighting the blackness in life looking for the light! Remember what I told you earlier there is beauty in everything in life even the darkness, you just need to look for it with the vision of a heart that is pure. My conversations with God continue regarding Maureen. She is special and has not been forgotten! Please give her a huge hug from me..love you much! xoxo

Sending healing thoughts to your cousin, Maureen. Loved this hub. If I could write poetry, my words would have repeated your thoughts. Enjoy reading your work. Vote up!

Welcome back ImKarn. This is a fantastic poem. Both raw and powerful. I must say I very much relate to your premise.

Very good hub. I often find myself sacrificing too much for others before viewing my own needs. But I help others in a teaching sort of way manner so that those I help will learn something...

There's my buddy! Voted up, awesome and beautiful. As the saying goes, "There's no place like home." While I will admit I am no poet, I also realize the depth of your words and the hidden meaning in each line. Your cousin most assuredly is in my thoughts and prayers. Welcome back, friend.

I know quite a few wealthy people, but none of them seem to be greedy, In fact, they're all quite generous. The only two I know who are 'greedy' are average middle class.

      Good Hub!
