What Shoes Are the Best?

Everyone loves shoes and there are so many kinds of shoes to choose. Kat Maconie's colorful and adorable picture book What Kind of Shoes Does a Hippopotamus Choose? is a relatable and fun read for young readers who love shoes.

Gators love shoes that they can splash around in. Crocs love stilettos. Dogs love clogs. The cats love ballet flats. Bunnies like boots. Dolphins love flip-flops. Sloths choose slippers because they like to relax. What kind of shoes do you think that the hippo likes? How many shoes would a centipede need? Hippo has difficulty in choosing her favorite. She loves to be fashionable. A surprise ending for young readers will tell what kind of shoes the hippo likes.

Sebastien Braun contributed his talents as an illustrator for the brightly colored illustrations for What Kind of Shoes Does a Hippopotamus Choose?

Bring Hippo and Her Shoes to Your Classroom

Teachers who teach in early education classrooms will want to add this adorable picture book to their classroom library. Creative teachers will find a wealth of ideas for curriculum activities after reading with your class.

*Read What Kind of Shoes Does a Hippopotamus Choose? in a story time session. Bring in a variety of shoes that are featured in the book. Invite parents to send examples of the shoes that are featured in the story.

*Call attention to each animal and the shoes that they like. Engage children in a discussion of the shoes that they like.

*Prepare a math activity to graph the kinds of shoes that your students wear. Color graphs can be prepared. Graphs that feature the styles can be prepared.

*Invite an employee from a shoe store in your community to speak to your class. They might bring in measurement tools that they use when measuring feet for a customer.

*Collect a variety of shoe boxes for students to use in a dramatic play activity in running a shoe store.

*Prepare a sorting activity for children to sort the shoes according to size, color, and plain/fancy shoes.

*Call attention to the illustration of the shelves in the shoe store where Hippo visits to choose her favorite shoes. Count the number of shoes with each style in the illustration. Count the colors of the shoes. Calling attention to details in illustrations provides an important skill for young readers.

*Engage children in an activity for a month in wearing a designated kind of shoe for each day. Sort the shoes by color. Designate the shoes by style. If a student does not have a designated style of shoe, invite parents to provide the shoes.

*Sneakers are the favorite shoes for young children. Designate a day of the week during the school year for only wearing sneakers. You can prepare a bulletin board with picture of children wearing their favorite sneakers. Sneaker Day for your class headlines the bulletin board.
