Words are dangerous

Updated on July 6, 2013

Words are dangerous things, you know?

they represent a thing they're not.

mistaken meanings can stealthy grow,

before you know it, knowledge-rot.

Take a look inside a dictionary

define a word then see it grow

where one word sat now spring up many

all definitions none can know.

Eternally deferred from the real

we seek a different way,

layers of ourselves to peel

back present, now today.

The poem is lovely. However, I had to laugh at the truth in it. I am a legal editor, and I find great humor in watching several attorneys argue over the meaning of a word. I frequently have to suggest changes in wording of the laws because it is ambuguious. It may be interpreted in two or three ways, or it may be so nonsensical that there is no rational interpretation. It happens sometimes when one word is used when the author means another. Nevertheless, we do sit with our Merriam Webster's and our Black's Law Dictionary close at hand. Voted you up++
