The Best Costume for Trick-or-Treating

Young children enjoy choosing their costume for trick-or-treating. They want to choose the same costume that their friends are wearing, but this is not always a good idea. Lucy Ruth Cummins' adorable picture book Creepy Sheepy teaches a life lesson that it is not always the best idea to be like everyone else.

Little Sheepy's favorite day of the year is approaching and he is ready to choose his costume. He knows what he wants to be for Halloween. He wants to wear the creepy costume of a werewolf. He is very persistent in his idea that this is the costume that he wants to wear and it will be the costume of the year. Mom and Dad take him to the shop to choose his costume and he grabs the last werewolf costume from the shelf. His dad attempts to change his mind with a variety of suggestions for other costumes. How about dressing as a little rain cloud? How about being a cotton ball? Little Sheepy insists on having the werewolf costume and Dad gives in. Halloween has arrived and Little Sheepy dresses in his costume. There are so many problems!! He goes outside to be ready for trick-or-treating and there are hundreds of little werewolves. Little Sheepy has a great idea to solve the problems with his costume. A surprise ending to the night of trick-or-treating teaches the life lesson that being one of a kind on Halloween is the best idea.

Pete Oswald contributed his talents as an illustrator to create adorable illustrations for Creepy Sheepy's big night of trick-or-treating.

Creepy Sheepy is recommended for ages 3-8. It was published by Flamingo Books, a division of Penguin/Random House. It has an ISBN of 978-0-593-69389-6.

Bring Creepy Sheepy to Your Classroom or Family Bookshelf

Teachers who teach in early education classrooms and parents who have the job of helping their child choose the best costume for trick-or-treating on the big night will want to add Creepy Sheepy to their classroom bookshelf and family bookshelf. Creepy Sheepy learns the life lesson that being one a kind on Halloween is the best choice.

*Read Creepy Sheepy in a story time session. Call attention to the fact that Halloween is coming soon and Sheepy must choose his costume.

*Engage children in a discussion of their choice of costume for Halloween. Create a math activity to graph the favorite costumes for this year's trick-or-treating.

*Provide drawing paper, crayons, and markers for children to draw themselves in their favorite costume for Halloween.

*invite children to wear their costume on a given day for trick-or-treating at school. Visit each classroom for trick-or-treating. You might like to provide a day for planning a school parade for children to wear their costumes for Halloween.

*Carve a jack-o-lantern for your classroom.

*Plan a day to invite parents to school to participate in a carving contest for jack-o-lanterns to display on Halloween. Provide ribbons for everyone who enters the contest.

*Provide a variety of candy for your trick-or-treating activity at school. Engage children in a discussion of their favorite candy.

*Invite parents for a lunch experience on Halloween for them to eat with their children. Prepare special jack-o-lantern sandwiches and cupcakes. Prepare a special "werewolf" punch for a fun drink.

*Prepare a cooking activity for Halloween for children to decorate cupcakes for the special day. Bring a variety of items to decorate the cupcakes.
