Don't Be A "Dummy" Get Out There And Read!

Updated on August 29, 2017

There are Several Dummy Books out there. Here are Five that I tend to Reference

Just because it says Dummies doesn't mean you have to be stupid to read them. It means that they are trying to make things easier to understand. Trust me some of the computer manuals I read can make your head spin. But then I can also pull out a Dummies book and that helps to bring things into an easier understanding.

Its sort of like having the King James Bible right next to the New Living Translation. I prefer to read the King James but once in a while I will pull up the other to make sure that I understood what they were saying. The same can be said for the Dummies series. For me they are a great reference material.

Below you will find five of the books that I have or have read to help me with thing that I am interested in or tend to use on a regular basis. A good example of this is the first book about Windows XP. Even though It is an older operating system you would be amazed how ofter it is still being used and how many questions I am asked about it.

For this image I scanned in the For Dummies and ran a copy / paste on the Squidoo. Trust me getting the back ground from blue to black was a bit by bit color change. And for the first time in a long time my wrist actually hurt.

Are you a Dummy who reads?

Or more to the point do you read the Dummies Books?

Windows XP for Dummies

No Microsoft don't take Windows XP away from me. Just because I still have a machine that runs DOS doesn't mean that I am attached to my computers. (The first Dummies book was DOS for Dummies. And I may have a copy somewhere. Back to Windows XP...

As I said above This is still a great operating system to be using. And this book will help you do just that. When you look at the cover it gives a 9 in 1 as part of the title. This means that it takes the different features of XP and breaks them down into nine sub categories.

Of the nine books included, the one that I have used the most lately is the - Wired and Wireless Networks. With most of the computers in our house being XP laptops the family wants to be able to move around. I often times have to work on the wireless portion of the network as most people want to be in the family room while the router is in another room. I also used this while working on a community room in a local Rec. Center to confirm a couple of questions that they were having about their systems connectivity.

Windows 7 all in one for Dummies

As with anything new there is a learning curve. And with what I do learning the newest operating system is part of the job. There are manuals out there but being able to break things down into simpler terms helps both me and the people that I am trying to help.

Would you rather call technical support and have some one quoting terms that make no sense to you or have them try and assist you in a way that you understand and yet don't feel like they are talking down to you. Then you will understand why I read the Dummies books. The help me grasp the information faster and make it easier to help people with their issue.

A Couple of Other Dummies Computer Books on Amazon

Windows Vista All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies

Granted Vista is like the replacement for Windows ME. Most people I knew wanted to go back to Windows XP or straight to Windows 7.

OS X Mountain Lion For Dummies

Its interesting with the Mac. It was mostly job related that I used them. And even then it was mostly hands on. Even then I was one of two people that over three hundred people would come to with questions.

Writing Children's Books for Dummies

If you were to check my library records you would see that this has been checked out several times. One of these days I will actually break down and purchase it.

One of the first things that I liked about this book is there is a Cheat Sheet that gives you several things to take into consideration before even starting down the road to writing kids books. I have also found that on the net as a PDF file for those of you interested check it out. By clicking on the Cheat Sheet in either place.

Its amazing what you can come up with and even more amazing how you can build on it just from doing a little extra reading. As my initial profile says I was writing children's books. But that sort of fazed out. With the amount of reading and now writing I have been doing on Squidoo I am once again working on the children's books that went on the back burner for a while. It is with this inspiration and the other knowledge that I got from this Dummies book that has helped me in more ways then one.

The Everything Guide to Writing Children's Books

I know that this is not a Dummies book but I found it to be a great companion for learning about writing children's books.

Small Business for Dummies

My wife and daughter have been hinting strongly for an undisclosed period of time that I should start my own business.

This book I am actually reading at this time. That is why it is part of this list. I figured if I could take the time and read it, it was worth sharing with all of you.

Add into that fact that the wife and daughter have been gently coaxing me, Ow the pain, to start my own business for a few years now...

So sorry to say that there is no real write up on this book right now. But that could change. No promises at this time.

Italian For Dummies

This year our son will be home schooled. One of the things he will be doing is a foreign language. He had thought about Russian but decided to study Italian instead. Now there is a course that we can use but it is also a good idea to have other reference materials for him to use. In this case it will be this book.

I have looked over a few of the other language books such as French, Spanish and German just to get an idea of how they are set up. Each one has its own way of doing things. But each one is a great study material to have at your disposal.

Its times like this that having these books at the local library so I can review them before purchasing them has helped out immensely. It also has given my son a change to decide which language he chose to pursue.

As I mentioned there were other Dummies books that we had looked at. So I have listed them here for you to look into.

French For Dummies

Where was book back when I was taking french back in 7th grade?

OK One more Bonus Book - And this one you can blame on my wife.

Roses For Dummies
Roses For Dummies

The wife loves her rose bushes. Every where we have lived she has found a way to plant at least one rose bush. And when I told her about this page I was working on that book somehow appeared on the dining room table. She has had it for a little while. I just don't remembering her purchasing it. But it appears that she is reading it all the time and with her she tends to burn through books while reading. This one she seams to look back on sort of how I use my Dummy for reference materials so does she.

After all those books you may be tired of reading - So take some time and write a comment
