When He Said I Do
When he said "I do"
What do you think he meant?
That his feelings for you simply came and went?
That fairy tales are endless and trouble never weighed
On your heart or his, no matter what wind swayed?
You thought it meant he would covet no other for a temporary while
That others would steal him away with their beauty and wry smiles?
You engaged him in this journey only as long as it went, not thinking it was circular or caring what he meant?
You thought he could complete you, bring happiness to your gate
His smarts and politeness would be enough to keep you in a dreamy state?
You thought he could change and begin the life you dreamt?
Your silences and stillness would not rise in him contempt?
Your inherent virtues of criticism and brooding would bring happiness and content?
That somehow mixed messages would push him through the door,
that when he said "I do" he meant only until he could take no more?
"I do" means forever, no matter the storm
that there are better days ahead
that love isn't just a concept living in ones head
that perseverance is required
and tears may be shed
that nights can be dreary and sometimes tough on your head
that patience and forgiveness must reside within
that with every waking morning you get to begin again
The snuggles and nibbles and hugs you threw
continue to grow as you and he do
"I do" is the phrase he took long in the saying
His love for you is never decaying
He said it for sure, without a doubt
Because he loves you, cannot live without
He said it resolutely, with heart in hand
He meant it truly, when he put on your finger that band
He is your husband, your lover, best friend
And in the end "I do" means to the very end.
