Retirement speeches, cards and gifts

There are often many Farewell retirement speeches as well in any workplace. When I took redundancy due to the number of other people being laid off/ taking or made redundant and retiring there have been a lot of goodbyes to me and from me.

Anyway it got me thinking about how to say goodbye to someone retiring or redundant or leaving work, how to make a good farewell speech when called upon to do that and what to put on all those leaving and retirement cards! It was also not always easy to know what to give as a thoughtful and unique gift.

So I did some research on what the great and good poets and people have to say about saying and writing goodbyes; great retirement gifts and goodbye speech books for inspiration. I hope you find it useful.

Whenever someone leaves work, especially if they work in a large organisation, an office, factory or other place where people work closely together most employees want to send a card.

Sometimes it is lovely to get one big leaving card and for everyone to write their wn special message inside it.

This card is huge and big enough for most places to have staff send their own message to the person leaving.

I am sure we all know t he person leaving work for retirement who would appreciate this fun pillow!

Some people I have talked with say that being made redundant or taking redundancy was the best thing that ever happened to them, leaving a space for new ventures, a new way of life. Others say it was the worst thing and devestating to them.

Leaving a work community where you feel you have been a part of it, the people, the work and the feeling is of a community is difficult. It is hard enough when you have chosen to leave -maybe through retirement or to go to a new venture.

However for many right now they are leaving under redundancy or being laid off and having to leave before they are ready to. Many people I know would not have chosen to leave work for many years.

Either way if you have been happy in your workplace many friendships are forged and life events shared with colleagues. Saying goodbye is hard and sometimes only softened by the thought of meeting up again and keeping in touch.

For many people making a speech is the top of their do not want to do list. Yet if people are leaving your workplace you may be called upon to give them a lovely personal leaving work speech.

The key is to make it special and interesting, not bland and boring.

Never say Goodbye...

A lovely Tea or Coffee Mug is often a very appreciated leaving gift and one most people can make good use of.

Especially if you have a few people leaving or if it has been decided everyoin ewill buy a small gift it is also cost effective.

This mug also have a lovely sentiment on it that is very appropriate.

Leaving work when many colleagues are being laid off is difficult, there is a lot of emotion and sadness to cope with when saying good bye.

On the other hand there were many who were retiring and happy to be moving onto a different phase in their lives.

Some also took this as an exciting opportunity to think about starting that business they had dreamt of, a new start in a new job role, retraining or spending more time with their children/grandchildren or elderly relatives.

If we just stop to think and breathe we can recall all the good times, the happy times and know that everything changes in life and we need to be grateful for what we had and that we had the opportunity to work together, share skills and experiences and share our lives.

When the time comes to move on and forwards and say goodbye, we can forge forward taking the strength of our built friendships and work bonds with us in our different paths.

Any sort of public speaking can be nerve wracking!

This book is clearly written, fun and full of helpful things to get you to deliver that wonderful speech.

Prepare well for a farewell speech and it is likely to go a lot better.

This clock i s my personal favourite and not only do I want it when I finally retire I have it in mind for someone who will be retiring in a a short while.

His work is very much "on the clock" and he has to be there and doing things at a certain time, ruled by the bell so to speak.

So in retirement I have heard him say many times he is not going to take notice of any clocks, watches or anything and just do "his own thing" when he feels like it!

I think he will appreciate the humour and sentiment of this gift.

Many of my colleagues and friends will be staying locally and we have pledged to meet up for lunch/ coffee and networking for new opportunities.

Some of my colleagues and frends will be moving to other parts of the UK and some abroad which will make it more difficult to meet up for a coffee!! However email always makes keeping in touch easier wherever people are nowadays and if they are close friends, trips can always be arranged !

Retirement is often much looked forward to . However how many of us plan for when it happens.

We might have planned financially -hopefully- but there is a lot more to think about.

If you have been used to working until into your 60's or more it is a huge life change and we need to give thought to it.

How we develop a new life after retirement is very important.

For close friends and work colleagues I really like the Irish Blessings.

Being part Irish myself they have a special meaning to me and I think they are very appropriate for people I care about.

A perfect goodbye or ending at work does not happen when mass redundancies/lay offs are taking place. It is hard to see people distraught and upset. It is hard to see people saying goodbye and leaving who do not want to leave and cannot afford to leave. However you just have to make the best out of the situation and help each other get through it. I think this quote sums it up very well.
