For my Wife. How do I Love You? Let me count the ways.

Updated on July 6, 2016

How do I love her - Let me count the ways.

One day your aunt introduces you to this person saying you are going to this college and she will be too, sit down and talk. It was this introduction that led us to celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. Talking to our friends we got together more times the the couple in "When Harry met Sally." She is the one that help inspire most of the poems that I had written. With that said there are a few listed below.

The picture that's used is of two gold bands. To some this is plain and simple. To others it is the greatest thing in the world. For me it was the later. For my was only expecting something simple not gold. She did not feel worthy of gold. When I told her she was there were many tears. The jeweler was also the same that my parents and grandparents had used.

The story of the seven cows.

There was once a young lady that thought that she was plane and simple. She thought that none would want her because she was simple and not beautiful. Her parents tried to encourage her and say that she was special and beautiful but she did not believe them. One day a young man came to visit. A suitor. In this land it was common to bring a gift or dowry for the young ladies hand in marriage. These tended to be livestock. Chickens and if you were special a cow. If you were from a rich family then it could be two cows. The young ladies family was not rich so she was not expecting much. Much to her surprise the young suitor came with seven cows for her hand in marriage. She felt for him to do this she must be the most beautiful girl in the world and worth more than any other woman. This made her feel beautiful and wanted. At that point she walked tall and with a different air about her. People did not recognize her because of the way she projected. She believed that she was beautiful and that is what came forth for the world to see.

Where am I going with this you are asking... My wife's engagement ring had seven diamonds attached to it. And this story's relayed to her when the ring was purchased for her.

Lady of Desire

Lady of desire

she calls to me now

over and over

the relentless calls come

beating into my skull

with each passing moment

louder and louder

'til nothing else matters

except for the call

ring on, ring on

answer her call

as quickly as possible

giver her a sign

that says that you hear

whisper or shout

the words will be there

the ones she will hear

and those understood

but those that mean the most

are never spoken enough

or are given without meaning

by uncaring souls

I LOVE YOU

its so simple

and yet so complex

that one always says it

and the other never tires of hearing it

If......Then

Her perfume assaults my senses whenever she comes close

An assault that I would gladly face every second to have her near

Her face burns into my memory every time I see it

I will not ask for an extinguisher for it would put out my own life

Her voice grades on my nerves through both of my ears

But if the voice were silenced I would be numb and the beauty of music would be lost forever

Her touch pierced my skin like many poisonous barbs

I will build up an immunity to feel her hand in mine

If......Then II

Her loveliness fades with the passage of time

Call me blind for I see only the beauty of the inner person

Her eyes lose their light as she grows old

A beacon, a lighthouse, a guide will I be forsaking her not when she needs me

Her spirit is crushed by man or by beast

I will lift her up and teach her to fly so she may sour once again

Her time on this earth comes to an end

I will be there in body or soul for nothing could divide us with love as our bond

The Vow

for better, for worse

in sickness and in health

forsaking all others

these are the vows we pledge

the music played

the river flowed

the wind blew gently

and ever so lightly touched your hair

the audience stared straight ahead

the dogs moved about unrestrained and free

the sunlight upon the trees

the only thing I saw was an off white beauty

the day moved on

the hours passed

my wife and I

alone at last

my wife, how strange

my wife how new

this gift, undeserved

yet granted by God

so to you my love, I shall be

a husband and a lover

a father and a friend

and whatever other roles you need

for you are my wife

granted to me

a gift more valuable than gold

and more precious than diamonds

so for you my love

I write these words

for you my love

I show fourth my heart

grant to me a smile

and a sweet bit of laughter

so I know that you're living

and not dead inside

shine fourth my love

bring on the day

brighten the world

as only you can

inspire our children

encourage and teach

birth in them Christ

the light of the world

dream of our future

both yours and mine

reflect on our past

and let love grow

this lady, this woman

granted to me

a covenant entered into

a scant moment ago

for as it started with a poem

our lived together woven by Him

the verses are added one at a time

by His hand they are written

to Him I thank daily

for this wife of mine

so to you I love daily

O wife of mine
