There is a fantastic book by a Spanish woman named Matilda Asensi that you might like. It's called The Last Cato, and it is also an adventure/mystery/thriller with a religious theme. And it's waaay better written than Dan Brown's stuff.

Katherine Neville wrote 'The Eight' in the 90s. It has a similar feel to it as Brown's books, various scholarly people are seeking out an ancient chess set. It goes back and forth between two distinct time periods. It's suspenseful and really interesting, touches on several key historical periods.
