Free eBooks for Reading!

Updated on December 20, 2012

Classic Free eBook Titles

Students who are excellent readers are ones who read frequently! Most schools give a recommend (or required) reading list for their students over the summer months. My teenagers both have lists they must read! In my search to find their required books and some fun books, I came upon several free eBooks that I wanted to share with others who may be searching!

I have downloaded the following on my Kindle for free. (Amazon changes their free selections frequently, so although I try to check and change these, please forgive me if I miss one that they have changed.) Many are classics while others are new - some I picked out, others were chosen and approved by my teens! If you do not have a Kindle, I do have a link for you to get one if you wish, but, I want to inform you that you do not need one to download these free books!!! Amazon has been very kind in supplying Free Kindle Reading Apps for iPhone, Windows PC, Mac, Blackberry, iPad, Android, & Windows Phone 7!

I hope you find a few books that you enjoy. :) There are many more than what I have listed. To find them, click on one of the books below. Scroll down the page a bit to find "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought". There are several pages of related free eBooks listed. I have over 1000 books on my Kindle - most of which have been free!! My children have loaded them onto their computers and iPhones to take with them on their busy days. Have fun finding great books!

Classical Greek

The Iliad - Homer

Learn a little about Greek mythology while reading some of the most ancient of poetry. "The Odyssey" by Homer is also available for free along with other Greek classics such as "The Republic" by Plato and "Ethics" by Aristotle.

Medieval Times

The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights - Sir James Knowles

Another classic story theme that appeals to kids, teens, and adults over and over again is the stories of Camelot, King Arthur, and the Knights of the Round Table. Readers who enjoy stories of royalty, bravery, triumph, and wizardry will be happily satisfied with this free ebook!

Other fabulous books in this genre would be "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood" by Howard Pyle and "The Three Musketeers" by Alexander Dumas which may also be downloaded for free from Amazon!

Historic Fiction

Oliver Twist - Charles Dickens

Whenever I read Dickens, I get the feeling of being pulled back to his time and location. It is as if I can step right into his verbal picture of his thoughts about the society and times of his life. Other free selections of Dickens include "A Christmas Carol", "David Copperfield", "A Tale of Two Cities", "Great Expectations", and others that are frequently on reading lists.

Vampires & Monsters

Dracula - Bram Stoker

The subject of vampires seems to be a popular one among teens in the recent past. Why not read about the most famous of vampires, Dracula? Everyone knows the name, but not everyone knows the original story. Find out with this free ebook! More reading in this genre that readers may enjoy are "Frankenstein" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow".

American Classic

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer & Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Mark Twain ~ Samuel Clemens

Almost every reading list I have found for junior / senior high seems to include these classic adventure books by Mark Twain. Read about these young men's adventures along the Mississippi River in the 1800s in this free edition of Tom Sawyer! (They have a free version of Huck Finn, also.)

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Readers who love mysteries will not be able to resist this set of adventures by the ultimate sleuth, Sherlock Holmes! Several short stories comprise this collection making it an easy read over many sittings or all at once.

Classic Science Fiction

The Time Machine - H.G. (Herbert George) Wells

I have noticed that many of my kid's shows and movies that they watch weave in the theme of time travel. One of the shows they were recently watching even had "HG Wells" traveling in time with the main characters of the program. Since the idea of moving back and forward in time is always fascinating, why not read the original story by Mr. Wells himself?

"The War of the Worlds" by H.G. Wells is also available for free.

Science Fiction ~ Space

The Phantom of the Opera - Gaston Leroux

After my teen student performed in a production of the musical form of "Phantom of the Opera" this spring, she was excited to find this book version of the spooky yet intriguing tale of love. Another free book high schoolers will recognize and enjoy in its book form is "Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo.

Poetry & Verse

A Midsummer Night's Dream - William Shakesheare

A tale of love which reminds one of teenage romances is the theme of this Shakespearean classic! After struggling to read her first Shakespeare novel this year, my teen came to enjoy and even request to read more Shakespeare over the summer! Other free Shakespeare titles you may find for free download include "Othello", "As You Like It", "The Winter's Tale", "Twelfth Night", "King Richard III", "The Merry Wives of Windsor", "Two Gentlemen of Verona", "Shakespeare's Sonnets", "Macbeth", and many others.

Amazon's Kindle eBook Reader! - I love mine!

My sweet hubby gave me a Kindle for my birthday two years ago because he knows how much I love to read! It is wonderful! I have downloaded tons of free eBooks from around the web along with several books that I bought to read. I love how I can carry literally hundreds of books around in my purse with me. I can pull it out when I'm at the doctor's office, waiting for my kids at their activities, on train and bus rides, or anywhere. It is really awesome to have a library with me wherever I go!

September 2012 Update: I now have over 1000 books on my Kindle - most of which I downloaded for free!!
