Where to Find Free Audio Books Online

Updated on September 7, 2014

Great background sound for working!

I can't work in complete silence and tv and music can be too distracting. Audio books let me work and listen while still being able to get work done.

Listen to Free Audio Books

There are a number of sites online which provide free audiobooks for download and many more with podcasts. This lens is to help you get started finding something to listen to.

Totally Free Audio Books to Download - No memberships, spyware, or other unpleasantness, oh yeah and completely legal.

There are lots of places out there with free ebooks, but some sites are crammed full or ads or are less than legal. I've collected the sites I feel are the best for downloading ebooks. Most of these are works in the public domain.

Also, if you use iTunes to manage your audiobooks browse around the iTunes store, there are many free and inexpensive audiobooks there (check both in audiobooks and under podcasts).

Poll! - What do you think?

How often do you listen to audio books or podcasts?

See results

Find a Podcast or Radio Show - Podcasts are audio blogs, and like most blogs they're usually free.

Here are some places to get you started listenign to podcasts. I've also included a link to BBC Radio which makes most of it's programs available for listening online.

Reader Feedback - Let me know what you think of the lens!

Fantastic Lens. One of the best audio books I have ever listened to was LEFT BEHIND.

It was that good, you could not drive a car and listen. To dangerous because you got right inside the story. Cheers from DOWNUNDER

Great lens. I love audio books and the easy listening technology that makes them easy to take with you anywhere. Another tip: check out your public library. My library has a program with free downloads direct to your computer without going into the library. It's great.

Thanks for the tips. I usually listen to audio books when I'm driving. I have the one book a month membership with Audible - but I do about 600 miles a week, so some supplementary books would be good.
