Game Of Thrones Books In Order

Updated on September 19, 2014

Game Of Thrones Book Order

I have read all of the Game of Thrones Books in order, as I'm a huge fan of the novels as well as the TV series on HBO.

If you've never heard of the Game of Thrones books by George R. R. Martin, then you may have heard of A Song of Ice and Fire instead. That's the official name of the book series. A Game of Thrones is the name of the first book in the series, but everyone calls the complete series Game of Thrones because the TV show is called that.

I've read the book series a number of times, each time waiting patiently for the next book in the series to be released. Although I want the series to end, so I can know the whole story, I also want it to keep going as the world and events George R. R. Martin paints are so vivid and awe inspiring.

I first began reading this book series over ten years ago and have been a dedicated fan ever since I picked up that first novel in the series!

It's very important that you read A Game of Thrones books in order or it will all become very confusing very quickly. Also, many of the characters will fail to make it to the end of a single book in the series, let alone the whole book series. You don't want to ruin the story by skipping ahead!

Game of Thrones Book Order

The books are listed in order below giving you a chance to see each of the book covers. You can click on the images below to find out more about the books.

I hope you enjoy the series as much as I have. It's one of my most favorite fantasy series of all time.

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)

A Clash of Kings (HBO Tie-in Edition): A Song of Ice and Fire: Book Two
A Clash of Kings (HBO Tie-in Edition): A Song of Ice and Fire: Book Two

How many Kings can one realm have? Who is the legitimate King and will it matter in the end?

A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 3)
A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 3)

The Starks will be betrayed and it may cost them everything. How many potential Kings will remain to make a claim for the Iron Throne? What of the potential Queen of Dragons?

This book is commonly split into two, which is why you will find some places selling a 5 book set and others selling a 6 book set. But they are the same thing and it's not because there's a book missing!

A Feast for Crows
A Feast for Crows

Arya is in the wind. Sansa is with family but is still in danger. Jon is in the North and has to decide what to do next.

A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire)

A Game of Thrones

1st Book In A Game of Thrones Book Series

I first read A Game of Thrones over ten years ago! I then re-read the series after the first season of the Game of Thrones TV Show aired. The TV show really helped bring the characters back to life and I couldn't quite remember all the details of what came next. And I didn't want to wait almost a year to watch season 2, so I read the books.

If you haven't read the books yet then start with this book. It sets the scene and you meet all the characters. If you watched the TV show before reading the books, people have told me they love the show but have found it confusing at times, since there are so many different threads and stories.

The TV show has stuck very closely to the books, but the books explain everything in more depth. It's hard to do that in 10 episode series and for you to get all the details needed.

In A Game of Thrones, things are changing in the North beyond the Wall. Unfortunately, Lord Stark of Winterfell has been called to the Capital in the South by his old friend and King of the realm, Robert Baratheon. He's been promoted to the right hand of the King and his daughters have to find their way in a world full of politics and intrigue they haven't been prepared for. The South is treacherous and enemies are often disguised as allies. When Lord Stark finds out the truth about the King's children, it puts not only himself, but also the future of his own children in danger.

In A Game of Thrones you either win or you die.

And the threat from the North continues. Stannis is licking his wounds and Tyrion will have to more cunning than he's ever been before.

Season 4 Recap

Season 4 just finished and it was totally awesome!

I love what they do with this show and even when they deviate from the books it still works (not that they've done too much of that).

I was waiting eagerly for this season as I already knew, from having read the books, that one of the characters that I love to hate was gonna die - Yippee!! All I can say (without spoiling for those that haven't seen it or read it is - Man that was some Wedding feast!)

Loved the introduction of the Viper and his set wardrobe of the long yellow tunic. It represented him perfectly and wish he had more screen time!

Finally, Tyrion made a mark that will cause serious ripples not only for the Lannisters' but for the whole Kingdom. And he did it superbly! Unfortunately, Varris will also pay the price!

A Dance With Dragons

Game of Thrones Book 5

Magic has been brought back to the Seven Kingdom's with the rebirth of dragons. Daenerys has built her own empire across the sea. However, one young man with an idea could change all of that.

In the North, the threat of the Others continues. Jon Snow has his work cut out for him as the 998th Lord Commander of the Wall. With few allies and far more enemies how long can he hope to survive?

The Game of Thrones continues and someone long thought dead will make an appearance to remember. However, some fans will be left scratching their heads wondering why this important player failed to make an appearance earlier...
