Stuck in the Past: A Poem
We will never know peace if we lose the present because we are trapped in the past and paralyzed by the future.
-- Erwin Raphael McManus
During that earliest and so blessed age
we were little sponges absorbing it all
without a past to repeat at that stage
eagerly answering to the future call.
Not burdened as yet with experience of stress
we had much enthusiasm and energy galore
while life was too young to turn into a mess
it was all about learning more, and more.
But after many testing years had passed
with those unexpected complex demands
stress was accumulating steadily and fast
as we suddenly got too much on our hands.
At that point life became too much
that exploring curiosity was gone
and so we lost its magic touch
years just going on and on.
We shifted mind's gears to automatic
starting to act out a programmed past
mind turning lazy and somewhat static
with every new thought resembling last.
So we keep drifting through routines of life
new stresses and old ones easily matched
wallowing in copies of the well familiar strife
now living the past and from future detached.
Thinking those same thoughts from year into year
feeling the same emotions and nothing to create
and it even feels normal operating in that gear
as it has become a well fixed personality trait.
Hey, could we wake up from past and start anew
to implement thoughts no matter how strange
to stir up new emotions just out of the blue
daring to explore, courageous to change.
Not to expect any entrance with pomp
into a new lane of life dynamic and fast
but like a swim in the river after a swamp
just to remove from mouth the taste of past.
