Chapter 27: Part 1
After an hour or two, he had the entire wall down with all the bricks resting in a dusty heap around their feet. I laughed as if to say, “What have we done?”
“Don’t worry. I’ll help you clean all this up,” Josh said.
“My staff will think I’ve finally lost it,” I smiled. It was Thursday and I had given them the rest of the week and weekend off to rest before the grand opening.
He smiled back and laughed, “It’ll be fine. I’m going to go call a contractor and make sure there's not too much damage.”
Chapter 27: Part 2
I smiled, but it faltered.
“What’s wrong, Amy?”
“Nothing,” I lied. I shook my head to dispel worries of our budding romance and then changed the subject. “Have you hired any help? Now our buildings are connected, will my staff have to help in your bookstore, too?”
His smile flat-lined. “No, I thought I could just run the bookstore on my own. That’s how my grandfather did it. I don’t need any help.”
“Maybe I shouldn’t have pulled out those bricks,” my laments growing.
“Well, it’s down now. We have to deal with it.” Josh looked agitated as he went to his counter to retrieve his cell phone to call a contractor.
I went back to my side of the building to make another cup of coffee. I definitely needed it.
