The Pattern of the Discontinued Suitor

Heather has a Bachelor's Degree in English from Moravian College and has been freelance writing for more than 16 years.

A promising beginning with a quietly developing rapport

Friendship blossoming over a ten weekend period

Tentative steps towards something deeper

Pulling back when the subject became too awkward

Unsure of whether to ask for a hug or a handshake

A year blew by at supersonic speed

Bravely decided to take a chance on an unsure proposition

Initially excited about the prospect of the risk

Became terrified when it became about more than fun and games

Emotions tended to cloud the judgments of many

This situation was no exception, of course

Two diverging paths that continued to widen

A former relationship that started off well

Before it hit the skids sooner rather than later

Too much, too soon in the affection department

Transformed a cynical realist into a mushy Hallmark lover

A cliché that they could have avoided with some effort

Rather than what truly happened in unreal time

Instantly suffocated, a traditional commitaphobe

Who bristled under the weight of romantic gestures

Unsure of what it was; mother or daddy issues

You would think, being surrounded by strong female figures

Would curb someone of their neurotic need to avoid companionship

Preferred to be alone than encased in the rock of motherhood

Ladies who didn't fold under the weight of so much pretend masculine energy

An illusion just as pronounced as the other's need to be a pack rat

Always holding on; never throwing away the unimportant

Clinging to a rapidly vanishing present transforming into a past tense

Believed in a future that never truly existed in reality

Fantasy much more appreciative than a disillusioned truth

Rose colored glasses smashed to pieces

The veil has been lifted from this illusion of non-existent grandeur

Both stayed too long at this particular party

Not eager to find another dance partner; even though it has been years

Since that one left the dance floor

Too cautious to trust another's false promises of a different tomorrow

Focused on only what today brought instead of a future too far away

To count for anything

Just a fantasy that will likely never materialize.
