Where Are Those Thousands of My Readers?: A Humorous, Silly Poem
Taking into account the public's regrettable lack of taste, it is incumbent upon you not to fit in.
-- Janeane Garofolo
You know, I'm thinking about readers' taste
better yet -- how versatile it actually must be
so, hypothetically, no one's writing is a waste
and in that strange writing breed I also see me.
I can't help but wonder -- without a trace of self-pity
where are those thousands of readers I'd call "mine"
they wouldn't even have to be either smart or pretty
but coming in some huge number would be just fine.
Well, by some simple logic of how different we all are
there must be a mass of tastes matching my style
and I wouldn't even have to be some literary star
but lineup of my readers should be long a mile.
Yeah, it's crazy how logic doesn't always make sense
in this world where there is something for any taste
which makes many writers good with no pretense
I'd say the same for myself, not being red-faced.
If my written expressions are full of shit
there are many who read shit each day
and then, if it's intelligent and full of wit
another multitude must love what I say.
So what's the true deal with all those hiding fans
are they lost somewhere in a cyber-calculation
all applauses echoing in some garbage cans
or, much more likely, all just my imagination.
