Somewhere and somehow I got old

Believing all the lies they told

I never used to think it true

Believed every word

About the Red, White and Blue

Now please don’t get me wrong

And think I don’t respect

All that our servicemen do

It’s just that my mind won’t allow me

or to sit back and let others figure it out

You think I am cynical

I think you’re too young

To know what I’m trying to say

I had all the answers

Till they foreclosed on my home today

I’ve worked thirty years, and I’ve paid in

So I’d have some SEE-CURE-ITY

But the banker says move out

And move now – I can’t take very much of what’s me

Now what ever happened to hard work

And making your way in this world

What happened to God fearing people

And seeing our flag fly unfurled

I never doubted our system

Though it took two husbands from me

I raised up their children to do right

And now they are laughing at me

I’m too old to start this all over

I’m too tired to try it again

Just tell me one thing if you would please

Tell me when did these lies all begin?
