Writing It for Ourselves: An Inspirational Poem
Better to write for yourself and have no public than write for the public and have no self.
-- Cyril Connolly
Like suddenly missing an umbilical cord
at times we feel this heavy separation
by window we sit somewhat bored
facing a social spirit's deflation.
Well, the feeling may be sort of mixed
in a way we hope for a sound of phone
but the moment isn't asking to be fixed
and we might be much better off alone.
Reluctant between these two needs
we may go online to share what we feel
with a poem, a story, hoping someone reads
though knowing deep down we can't make it real.
Not as real as we feel it, so maybe why bother
as words can't replace this deep trembling sigh
our story will be generalized as one or another
taken as a regular fiction, in other words -- a lie.
Words sound so different between lips and in ears
and we know the feeling of not being understood
so all those unspoken words and uncried tears
if shared won't do much to change that mood.
But now to the rescue comes this bright notion
to write it for ourselves and we'll understand
encoding into each line this deep emotion
now with less need for a friendly hand.
