55 Communities in Tampa

Updated on October 8, 2011

What Are 55 Communities?

55 Communities or 55 Plus Communities are residential developments designed for adults aged 55 and above. Most homes are usually one-story and are designed with seniors in mind. They include features that make life comfortable, convenient, secure and safe for residents, such as easy-to-open doors, emergency buttons, easy-to-access alarm systems and electronic systems.

Most of these communities require that at least one person in the family is aged 55 or above. Some communities allow pets, some don't.

Why Do Many Adults Prefer 55 Communities?

Many adults want to live in 55 communities because of the following:

  • Common facilities are designed for seniors, such as tennis courts, lawn bowling, golf courses, libraries, parks, trails, pool tables, ballfields, shuffleboard courts and community centers.
  • Various clubs are available, such clubs for tennis, fitness, painting classes, scrapbooking, movies, ballroom dancing, quilting and arts and crafts.
  • Lots of group activities such as group dinners, card games, and potlucks.
  • No loud teenagers' parties that persist through the night
  • No loud music
  • Security and safety of gated and patrolled communities
  • Access to shops, restaurants, health facilities, laundry services and other facilities providing services to seniors
  • Assisted-living facilities (in some 55 communities)

Things to Consider When Choosing a 55 Community

Here are some of the key factors you need to think about when choosing from many of the 55 communities across the U.S.:

Location -- Do you like it to be near where your children are? Are you particular about the weather and topography? If fishing is among your hobbies, then find a community along a lake or near ponds. Do you have special medical needs, then you have to be near a health facility managing your health condition.

Facilities or amenities -- If you're a golfer, then find a golf community. If you like boating, strolling or swimming, find communities located near lakes, forest reserves or the beach.

Home price, HOA, taxes and related fees -- How much down payment can you afford? Can you make bigger monthly payments since you have a shorter loan term because of your age?

Activities -- What activities will make your days happy, and are these available in your target community or nearby? Are you fond of theaters, arts centers, or sports? Or do you plan to attend a university class?
