How do you know if the pump is bad?

The most common symptom of a bad pump is water leaking out of the bottom of the machine. The water most likely starts as a small leak and over time becomes more and more of a nuisance. The leak will be located in the front of the machine in the center, this is the location of the pump.

A leaking pump must be replaced, there is no repair.

Additional symptoms that are less common are low water flow, or the pump is frozen and cannot move. This will cause additional symptoms with the washer. Usually a frozen pump is the result of a foreign object being lodged in the pump. Sometimes the blocking item can be removed and free the pump up.

Locate the PUMP

The pump is located on the lower front. It is mounted onto the front of the motor.

To remove the pump, you must first remove the hoses connected to the pump. These hoses are connected with very sturdy hose clamps. It helps to have a hose clamp tool. These hoses are on the lowest part of the machine and are filled with water, there is about 1 quart of water left in the hoses. A shallow pan can be used to catch some of the water, but a towel or two will be required to finish the job.

The pump is connected to the motor with two spring clips. Remove the clips by applying pressure on the inside of the clip toward the outer edge.

The clips should be removed completely. The clips are disengaged by releasing them from the pump and then turning them 90 degrees, the ends of the clips are inserted into slots in the motor.

This will release the pump from the motor. The pump then can be removed by pulling away from the motor.

Hard to Remove Pump

If a pump has been leaking for a long time, then it may be difficult to remove. The pump typically leaks from the front side. The water leak starts out as a small leak that is not noticeable. By the time it leaks enough to be noticed, it has leaked quite a while and it may have caused the motor shaft where the pump is mounted to rust. This rust can make the removal of the pump from the motor quite difficult.

If you have this scenario, you must be patient, take you time and work methodically to remove the pump. You can damage the motor in this process so you must be careful to not pry against the grease cap located under the pump.

Start by spraying a lubricant on the pump connection such as WD-40. Let it soak. Then wiggle and rock the pump to see if you can get it to budge. You can use a long bar or screwdriver to pry slightly. Caution should be used in prying since the motor grease cover can be damaged. If you cannot get the pump to budge, you may have to resort to breaking the pump housing. If you decide to do this, use a chisel and break away the pump in a two inch radius from the center. Once you break out the center, use pliers, chisel and mallet and keep working on the circumference until pieces of the pump can be removed.

This may seem extreme, but you don't care about a bad pump, and you want to protect the motor. If you damage the motor you will have to replace it too and that would change a $25.00 repair into a $150.00+ repair.

Once you have successfully picked away at the pump, you will find that the motor shaft is rusted, The rust must be removed. The only way to do this is to file it down. I have used a small grinder successfully but it is not recommended since the grinder can easily damage the motor. Use a long flat file to file and scrape the shaft until it is smooth.

Do not force the new pump onto the shaft. It should slide on easily. If it does not, you need to file more. Keep filing until you have it filed down to its original size.

Once you have the motor shaft filed properly, the new pump will slide on easily. Cover the shaft with a light coating of grease. This will help with the problem in the future.

Install the New Pump

It may be necessary to place one of the hoses on the pump before you connect it to the motor shaft. One of the drain hoses is stiff and comes in a direction that cannot be accessed with the pump placed on the motor shaft. This would be the short hose. The long hose can be connected with the pump in place. To test this, place the pump on the motor without the retaining clips. Check to see if the hoses can be connected. This will demonstrate for you what needs to be done to connect the shorter of the two hoses.

Make certain that the hose clamps are centered on the pump inlet and outlet openings. Install the spring clips into the motor slots.

Installation of the pump is complete!

Dance a jig, jump up and down, and yell yippee!

Reverse the order for removing the case and replace the case. Pay particular attention to the water filler, it can be damaged when the case is placed onto the frame, make sure the filler is moved toward the front.
