GE Profile Microwaves

Updated on June 22, 2009

The GE Profile Brand

The GE Profile brand name boasts kitchen appliances that are built with a contemporary design and offer the latest in kitchen gizmos and gadgets to make your life in the kitchen easier and more enjoyable.  In general the brand consists of appliances that have a sleek design with solid workmanship.  The kitchen appliances covered by the GE Profile brand name are wide-ranging and include: refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, electric ranges, and wall ovens.

For the sake of this hub, we will focus our attention on the GE Profile Microwaves.

GE Profile Microwaves

In the GE Profile microwaves line of appliances, there are two basic classes of microwave ovens to choose from: Over-the-Range and Countertop. If you are looking for a full size built-in wall oven, those too are available but will not be covered here.

In the over-the-range class, prices vary from the lower end at $499 for the Spacemaker varieties which are a good fit for smaller kitchens or the budget conscious buyers to the ultra high end Advantium® series retailing for $1600. Depending on your personal preference, there are numerous convection style or traditional style cooking ovens to choose from.

In the countertop class of microwave ovens, you will find that they are much more affordable ranging from $229 up to $529. When choosing the microwave oven that's most appropriate for your needs, you'll need to consider what will work best for you. If you're cooking large family size meals, you'll want a bigger space compartment. If all you're heating up is the occasional hot pocket, save some money and space and purchase a Spacemaker. You'll also want to consider what features are important to you, such as auto-defrost and other intelligent sensing / re-heat functions. The options are numerous, but don't fool yourself into buying something you'll never use just because it's another button on the microwave and it looks cool.

In the comments below, please share your experience with GE Profile Microwaves. If it's good or bad, we want to hear about it to help other consumers make the right choice.  Please be sure to include the model number used, and talk about your experience with quality, cooking, features, etc...

GE Profile Options

When looking for a new microwave, you may find yourself intrigued by all the bells and whistles. First, I'll ask whether or not you really need it. The GE Profile Advantium® series has hundreds of options, many of which you will probably never use. For example, the GE Profile Advantium® Above the Cooktop Oven boasts over 100 pre-programmed menu items, recipe save capability, manual cook mode, and more. If you're not a techy person, you might find yourself overwhelmed by the choices. Don't have feature envy when purchasing your microwave. It's supposed to heat up your food, not remember your kids' birthday!

Consider some of the features you will need. Almost all microwaves these days have some sort of sensor re-heat function. Some nifty feature you might like is the ability to turn on/off the turntable. Sometimes you have an oversized dish that keeps banging the walls or bouncing back and forth as the turntable spins - simply disable the spinning and you're in good shape. Many microwaves have an auto-defrost that will automatically adjust the power settings and time based on the weight of the food you are defrosting. The various GE Profile microwaves available on the market have these features.

The real question is how much capacity, how much power, and how does it look? Oh, and do you really need 100 menu items to plow through. :)

For the various specs and options available, I encourage you to visit GE's Microwave appliances page to browse the various models.
