20 Great buys at a dollar store.

Updated on July 16, 2015

There are things you should buy, and there are things that you shouldn't buy at a dollar store. This hub is going to discuss some of the greatest buys at your local dollar store. It could be at Dollar General, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, My Dollar Store, Everything's a Dollar, or just plain Dollar Store. Which ever one it is that you choose to shop at, the bottom line here is how to stretch your hard earned dollar as far as it will go.

The early bird almost always gets the worm. A lot of dollar stores restock late at night, so the best buys can be found early in the morning. The dollar store offers you a wide range of inexpensive household goods. At your local dollar store you can often find discounted good products at a real bargain, and you definitely want to consider buying some of these 20 things at your dollar store -

1. Socks - The socks you find on the shelves at your local dollar store can be just as good if not better than the socks you at department stores in your big box stores or malls.

2. Picture frames - The picture frames that you find at dollar stores can an excellent buy. Just make sure that you carefully check the frames out first for major defects.

3. Dishes - Dollar stores often offer a great selection of open stock dishware. These are perfect dishes for families with little kids.

4. Vases - The dollar store carries a vast variety of different styles of vases at a great price. If one dollar store doesn't have what you are looking for then try another dollar store for that special vase that you are shopping for.

5. Hair Accessories - Dollar stores carry a wide range of combs, hair bands, brushes, hair bows, bobby pins, and hair berets at a fraction of the price that you would find at other stores.

6. Seasonal Decorations - Your local dollar stores have a big selection of holiday decorations when those seasons roll in. You can find bargain priced Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day, and Easter decorations for your house at great prices.

7. Party Supplies - You can save up to five times of what you would spend elsewhere by simply buying your party supplies at a dollar store. You can pick up all of your party favors, streamers, balloons, plastic tablecloths, paper plates and cups at your local dollar store.

8. Dish towels - Both wash cloths and dish towels are great buys at your dollar store.

9. Greeting Cards - You can always find that special heartfelt message that you are looking for in your greeting card for considerable less at your local dollar store. You will always be able to find a wide selection of greeting cards for that loved one in your life for a bargain price at your dollar store.

10. Candy - Both boxed and bagged candy like you get at the movie theaters is a great buy at your dollar store.

11. Wrapping paper - Wrapping paper, bows, gift bags, and gift boxes are all great buys at your local dollar store. Something to remember about wrapping paper and it's accessories is why do you want to pay more somewhere else for something that's simply just going to end up in the trash anyway?

12. Storage Containers - You can find great deals on plastic storage containers, and storage bags at your local dollar store buys. You will end up saving a small fortune when buying your storage containers at a dollar store, but just make sure that they will all seal properly.

13. Reading glasses - The dollar store is a great place to buy a simple pair of reading glasses, which are just as good as those found in more expensive stores.

14. Makeup - You really can get good quality dollar store makeup, and for just a dollar. The dollar store has a large selection of makeup for women of all ages at a great savings to their pocketbook.

15. Bath products - All children seem to really enjoy taking a bubble bath. The dollar store is a great place to get your bubble bath, bath oils, bath sponges, body powders, and scented soaps .

16. Glasses - Mugs and glasses are also very good buys at your local dollar stores. You also have the terrific option to buy only the mugs or glasses that you need than having to buy the whole set.

17. Cut-rate sodas - The dollar store is an excellent place to stock up on good old soda-pop. You don't have to stockpile it like the end of the world is coming as Honey Boo Boo's Mama did, but you can normally get a great deal on it when it's in stock.

18. Pregnancy test kits - Dollar store pregnancy kits are just as accurate as those at your local drug stores, and they will save you a boat load of money as well.

19. Reasonably priced prints - The dollar store is a great to find both rare and obscure prints to add to your collection. You can enhance the walls of your home for just a fraction of the price that you would have ended up spending in other high end stores. There is always a broad selection of prints available with famous prints such as Samuel Blankenburger's - "Hammerbirds".

20. Magic Beans - Don't forget your magic beans at the dollar store. Jack didn't, and if he would have we would have never had such a wonderful bedtime story as "Jack and the beanstalk".

I like the dollar store for pet supplies, things like doggy poop bags. It's way cheaper than the pet store. Great hub btw!

I love shopping at dollar stores such as Dollar General and Family Dollar. You be surprised at the things you find in there for low prices. That is my candy, sock, glasses, dishes (preferably plastic plates and silverware), and hair accessory headquarters.

I shop at the Dollar General in my small town 2-3 times per month. I much prefer it to Walmart, as the prices are good, and no long lines! I mainly purchase dog food & treats, body lotion, batteries, and cleaning supplies. Rarely do I purchase food, but that is because I buy organic as much as possible.

It is always fun to see what seasonal items are in our dollar store too. They have some really cute things for Easter, Valentines, etc. Every time I go in one I'm surprised at all they carry. Great ideas here.

Interesting reading. We used to have dollar or two dollar stores in NZ, I haven't seen them for a long time now, I have seen "Golden Coin" outlets around, so that would be much the same as that is either $1 or $2. Must have a look and see what is available. I know I have brought cards from them.

I have a store not far away. Have I been in it? Nope. Thanks for the helpful tips... I'll meander over there this week.

I've bought many of the items you mentioned at our dollar store (never number 18), though you've enlightened me on a few. I'll add cleaning supplies to the list, as I noticed someone else mentioned. I'm eying a coupon, good today only, for $5 off a $25 purchase. Thinking I probably should get on over there and stock up on a few things. Thanks for the motivation!

You have written a very useful hub, and I really enjoyed reading it. I do shop at the dollar store for special items, and I've also found some to be both unique and helpful. I am very new to hubbing, and I am thoroughly enjoying meeting new hubbers with varying writing styles, subjects, and passions. Thanks for choosing to follow me, and I hope that I have something engaging for you to read very soon.

When I was young there was the 5 and 10 cent store. Now, it's a dollar store. In the Philippines we have an equivalent of sorts. Some of the items you listed are also good things to buy in these store equivalents. But I noticed recently that they are featuring more expensive products in the store which is sad, because one of the things I liked about the store is you always knew how much something cost. Hope they aren't messing around with their marketing their own disadvantage.

Wow interesting and for sure there are lots of buyers in that store. Even I would buy if we have here too.

I love that 99 cent store sign. Hey, a penny saved is a penny earned. I shop at Dollar store frequently and find lots of bargains, household supplies, writing tools, and more. Great post!

Thought I would pop in for an update. In our Hillcrest community in San Diego they just confiscated over 40 crack pipes purportedly for sale in a dollar store. This world is crazy! Shoot they could have at least gotten 4 bucks for the pipes ;-)

@Efficient Admin lol I know right.... I love holiday season at Dollar Tree .... oh my gosh I love the packets of napkins they have, I think its like 8 or more (i am not sure) in a packet for $1 .... in other stores its like 4 packets of napkins for close to $2 lol I happy someone understands my obsession!!!

Also I love to go browsing throughout the year at Dollar Tree for stocking stuffers for Christmas gifts! It's fun and I have found lip balm, sewing kits, Hershey candy, travel sizes of each hand lotion and hand sanitizer, pretty boxes and bags to put the gifts in, nail manicure kits, tiny candles, nail clippers, Lance peanuts (6 snack bags for $1), travel size Kleenex and everyone seems to love their gifts at Christmas time and I save a lot of money and have a blast at the same time. Oh me too I could just go on and on LOL!

I know I commented already but I love the Dollar Tree. I got baking pans for a dollar each and they are good quality (though they do get stained easily). If you go to Walmart, you going to have to pay over $5 for a baking pan, and like $20 for a set. The quality maybe a little better at Walmart, but unless you bake everyday who needs an expensive baking pan. BTW I love talking about the Dollar Tree and I can go on and on. I used to just go to Dollar Tree and just stare at stuff. lol i know weird right. But I love the Dollar Tree and dollar stores in general. :)

The Dollar Tree has these glass dishes or glasses that are excellent for just $ 1. Even Walmart don't have that kind of quality glass for a dollar. Walmart's prices have been going up I have noticed. I just wanted to add that yes Dollar Stores have high quality dishes for a dollar. Those are bargains!!

I love the Dollar Tree because there are several in our area. What one is out of, another usually has in stock. I love the food items. Their name-brand canned goods are cheaper than Sams Club. Another favorite is pet bowls. Their $1 porcelain cat bowls sell for $5 and $6 at the pet stores. That's a real savings for us because our cats (and Mr. B) break so many bowls on our tile kitchen floor.

Good hub, well researched and written. Voted up++

I love The Dollar Tree in my neighborhood. I have bought ceramic bowls and coffee mugs, food storage containers, sponges, holiday table clothes, foil and food items and of course saved a lot of money.

The same holiday tableclothes at Dollar Tree will cost $1.99 at Party City; the same quality coffee mugs and eating bowls may cost $5.99 elsewhere, but like you said you have to snatch them up real fast or they disappear. Great hub, voted up and across.

Any kind of detergent. sunglasses, Mustard and pickles, tuna fish and beans and chile in cans.

My deal is that when I have a list of stuff, I go there first and weigh the quality balance act. And then go to my supermarket.

      Awesome helpful good stuff, thanks
