Original Works of Art on Glass

Hand painted wine glasses have become hugely popular. The glasses show a distinct flair and originality and can be custom painted to order. Because of their uniqueness, Hand painted glasses are often used as toasting glasses for a wedding. Custom champagne glasses can be hand painted with the names of the bride and groom. The glasses can also be painted using the colors present in the theme of the wedding. The glasses make fantastic gifts.

The hand painted wine glasses are great for wedding showers, baby showers, girls' night out or a bachelorette party because besides using a color scheme, a party them can be used. Wine glasses could be painted with pink daisies or blue trucks for a baby shower. For a wedding shower the glasses could be painted with white roses or detailed with pearly lace. A girl's night out theme on a hand painted wine glass might include the names of the girls attending and a theme such as wine and cheese painted on the glass. A bachelorette themed glass could be Hawaiian themed or painted with colorful balloons.

Holidays also mark a great occasion for buying hand painted wine glasses. For Halloween a set of wine glasses covered with bats, ghosts and ghouls completes your Halloween party. Christmas themed glasses can be simply covered with snowflakes or very ornate with a detailed poinsetta gracing each glass. Imagine how gorgeous your holiday table will look with a set of hand painted wine glasses gracing the table's setting. As you can see, the choices are endless and this is one of the reasons that hand painted wine and champagne glasses have become so mainstream and popular.

Painting Lavender Flowers on a Wine Glass

How Wine Glasses are Hand Painted

Painting on glass has become an easy craft to complete thanks to the affordable and resilient glass paint available at craft stores and online crafting supply chains. The paint is made specifically for glass and requires only a few steps.

  1. Prep the glass to be painted with a cleaning medium. This cleaner removes oils and dirt that would prevent the paint from adhering to the glass. The cleaner can be found at craft stores and may be included in a kit for hand painting on glass.
  2. Paint your wine glass. You can draw out your painting on paper and tape it to the inaside of the glass to copy it to the outside with your paint or you can be daring and paint your champagne flute free hand. Paints sold for glass painting can be transparent or opaque. The transparent paint gives a stained glass effect to the glassware that you are painting.
  3. Place glass in oven if the directions require this. Some glass paint sets by being cooked in the over. Others require a top coat. The paint that requires oven time will usually last longer and is dishwasher safe. If the paint is not designed to be fired in the oven, it requires a top coat. this top coat is sold with glass painting kits or can be purchased separately at craft stores.

Follow the instructions on all glass paint. The glass paint is very easy to use and comes in an array of colors to complete your theme.

See below for a glass paint recommendations.

Where to Buy hand Painted Wine Glasses

Because of the popularity of hand painted wine glasses, it is very easy to find them online. These glasses make great gifts for Mother's Day, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and holidays. Many artists offer a package that allows you to purchase the glasses and pick your theme or style. This package lets you pick your style and gives the artists time to create an original wine glass, champagne glass, or set for you. Allow a couple of weeks for these glasses to arrive. Glasses ordered this way may be a bit more expensive because they are custom. The extra expense is well worth it if you intend to dress up your tables with originality and your own sense of style.

In the case of glasses for holidays, bachelorette parties and general themes, the glasses have been hand painted already and will arrive quickly at your door step. These hand painted glasses are a good option if you are pressed for time and can't wait to have your glass in hand. These glasses may also be a bit less expensive than a custom ordered theme or style painted on a wine glass.

Ebay has a huge selection of artists who hand paint glasses for you. The Ebay listings for therse artists often include links to take you to their Ebay stores directly. This allows you to pick an artist whose style of glass painting you love. You then shop directly from them and you get many original choices. The online art and vintage stores, Etsy, also has a huge selection of hand painted wine and champagne glasses to choose from. Both Ebay and Etsy allow you to message the shopartists directly for help in choosing the perfect custom painted wine glass.

Caring for Your Hand Painted Glassware

Many hand painted wine glasses and champagne glasses are dish washer safe. The artists who painted your glass will give you specific intsructions for caring for your hand painted glassware. Often, if the glasses are dish washer safe, they will require placement on the top rack of the dishwasher to guarantee that the paint does not wash off. Glasses that have been painted with glass paint that gets cooked in the oven retain their paintings longer than the paint that only requires a tops coat.

Wine glasses that have been painted with paint that does not get tempered in the oven will last longer is washed by hand. I recommend aslways washing your hand painted items by hand. these are original pieces meant to be cherished and if you give them a little special attention by hand washing them your hand painted wine glasses will thank you for it by lasting longer and retaing their true colors.

Hand painted wine glasses look great with the addition of wine charms at their base. Wine charms help to mark glasses for guests when you are having a party. Your guests will stops aking "is this my glass" when you tag their glasses with a wine charm.

      Tonipet,

Yes, if you see a pattern that you love just trace it and tape to inside of glass and then paint away. You can plan the colors to match an existing dinnerware set or the scheme of your dining room. So much fun!

Give it a try. It is pretty easy to do and you will have something to cherish because you made it yourself! I love painting perennials like iris or tulips on glass.

Very beautiful hub. If buying hand-painted glasses can be that expensive, then maybe we can try the suggestion of drawing out painting on paper and tape it on the inside of the glass that we may copy from the outside. We might discover an ability... so worth-trying! Thank you for this Corey. The glasses are really elegant. Voted up!
