Mosquito Traps

Updated on May 28, 2010

Mosquitoes suck. I didn't intend the pun, but I reckon it can't be helped. All the same, mosquitoes are nothing to laugh at, as they carry diseases, cause itching and annoyance, and in some cases allergic reactions. In the past people relied on chemical sprays and the like to prevent mosquitoes from invading their homes and garden, but those chemicals aren't much better for us than they are for the mosquitoes. Fortunately we've got better technology these days and mosquito traps are one of the best ways to get rid of mosquitoes.

Blue Rhino SkeeterVac

The Blue Rhino SkeeterVac Mosquito Elminator is one the high end mosquito traps. Its works by transforming propane into CO2, which mosquitoes are attracted to (this is how they track you down in the dark -- via the CO2 in your breath). It's very easy to put together and get running (no tools needed) and it only weighs about 20 pounds, despite looking big and bulky in the photos. When the mosquitoes get close enough, they are sucked in via a vacuum and sticky tape. This model will work on up to 1 acre of your yard, and it will also work on other insects as well. It's quiet, safe and doesn't emit any odors.

Dynatrap Insect Eliminator

At first glance you may think the Dynatrap Insect Eliminator is one of those cruel and creepy zapper thingies, but it isn't. This is clever insect trap that will vacuum mosquitoes and other insects into the cage, where they will then die of thirst and starvation. Ok, so it's not really any more humane than the creepy bug zappers, but it is quiet and you won't have to watch them fry on the fence. Works without propane or chemicals and has a 10 foot cord to make it easier to hang.

Mega Catch Premier Mosquito Trap

This is another impressive mosquito trap. It weighs about 10 pounds and will work on up to 1.5 acres of your yard. The casing will protect it from the elements. The Mega Catch does not use propane or other chemicals, but instead works by utilizing a UV light. Comes with a 60 ft extension cord and a timer so you can program it to work when you want.

Flowtron Electronic Insect Killer

Ok, so the Flowtron Electronic Insect Killer isn't a trap -- it's a bug zapper. But boy is it effective. These have been around for ages for precisely that reason. They are cheap to operate and very effective at getting rid of all sorts of insects. it will protect an area between 1 and 1.5 acres. It's got a protective covering to protect against the weather and it comes with a 2 year warranty.
