Review of the Dewalt DW734 Bench Top Planer

Updated on February 21, 2013

A Really Nice Portable Planer

I was looking for a planer for my workshop and ultimately the one that I chose to go with was the Dewalt DW734. Ideally I would have liked to have been able to get a full size stationary planer but I had neither the space in my shop nor the budget for one. That being the case a bench top planer was the best choice for me. I considered several different models but because of the reviews that I have read and the good experience that I have had with other Dewalt tools I picked the DW734, this is my review.

I did some shopping around to find the best price on a DW734 and ultimately that meant that I bought one from Amazon. It took about a week to get it delivered and when it did I was glad that I had ordered one delivered rather than buying one at the hardware store, the box it came in would have been far too big to fit into my car.

Getting my planer set up and working proved to be a very simple matter, there is little assembly required so you can be using it in a matter of minutes. I did however find that I had to make some adjustments in order to get an acceptable cut quality. This was not unexpected as you have to do it with pretty much all power tools. Making the necessary adjustments was easy and did not take too long.

Once I got everything dialed in there was a noticeable improvement in cut quality. I did however find that I had to be careful not take too much off on each pass. If you try to take too much there will be a fair amount of snipe so to get best results you will need to limit the depth and make extra passes. This may be a problem if you are working on a lot of pieces but for me and I would assume most hobby wood workers it is not a major issue. One of the best features on the DW734 is the dust collection system which is one of the best that I have tried, make sure that you use it as it greatly improves the results that you will get.

There were a few issues that I had with my Dewalt planer, the biggest of these was the vibration. Despite the name you cannot just place it on bench top and use it, the thing vibrates like crazy, if you don’t have it secured somehow it will move all over the place. My other issue was how loud it was, you will definitely want to use hearing protection.

I really like my Dewalt DW734 and I would highly recommend it to anybody looking for a good quality bench top planer but who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money. To be sure there are planers that do a better job but you will also pay quite a bit more for them. You would be hard pressed to find one that represents better value for the money.
