Of all the species causing us great annoyance by their present the fly has got to be the one which well defies the meaning of a pest. People and beast alike are a target for these sometimes blood sucking intruders. Everyone at one time or another will experience the annoyance of a fly.
Common house flies roam even the cleanest structures if allowed to invade. Screens and weather stripping are the best prevention we have for keeping them out. Although house flies are less likely to bite like some of its relatives, their ability to carry bacteria and disease is just as threatening.

The danger of using pesticides and insecticides should be considered before such actions are taken. Not only will it kill flies, but the fumes are not good for us or our pets to be around either. Read the labels. It’s toxic. Extreme precautions are important. Surely there are better ways. The length of caution warnings are nearly as long as the aerosol can the product is in. The safest way to use these extreme methods would be not to use them at all. Chemicals of any kind are harmful. Our homes shouldn’t have to be a place to experiment with them. If we must spray this stuff, outdoors would be the place to do it. So, the can label states for use indoors and outdoors doesn’t mean you won’t have residue of the toxic contents all over your floors, walls and furnishings. The dead flies are found anyplace they may fall, making for an unpleasant task of clean up.
Alternative to Pesticides
Not only will filth and nasty odors attract flies, but some good smells draw them, too. Certain shampoos, soaps and perfumes for whatever the reason, seem to be an invitation. If they seem more drawn to you than others, perhaps your choice of fragrance is their choice as well. However there are pleasant odors flies tend to stay away from. There are herbs, spices and plants we can keep around our homes to make flies stay clear. Flies hate mint, lavender, basil, clover, cloves, and marigolds. Eucalyptus oil will repel flies as well as mosquitoes.
Flies breed in decaying organic plant and animal matter. They love moisture. Eliminate breeding grounds to destroy the fly population near your home. Keeping garbage as far away as possible will vanish any welcome sign to invite them in. Flies will always be here, but we can control their habitat if an effort is made. A feast of any type of food or waste will draw them close. Ants are not the only unwelcome guest to a picnic. Tips to avoid flies from becoming a nuisance can be simple. Natural remedies and common sense prevention is far better than any chemical released into our environment.
