Successful Container Gardening on a Limited Income

Updated on February 21, 2015

Container gardening is the use of containers for growing plants when there is not enough space to plant in the ground. There are different types of pots that are used. Generally pots made of terracotta are used. There are also plastic containers and window boxes that are used. Before beginning to container garden deciding on what types of plants that will be grown and what types of pots that will be used will make a difference in the crop that will be given at full growth.

Basil, chives, thyme, and other herbs love being grown in pots. Herbs are great plants for the beginning gardener. These plants can also be grown inside in the winter but can be set right outside the door once spring arrives. When growing herbs terracotta or plastic containers are best. Herbs are very minimal in cost. Growing herbs is very cost effective throughout the year. Herbs can be used in numerous types of food. What a great way to save money and enjoy delicious meals by growing herbs.

Another money saving plant that can be grown is green onions or scallions. This is very easy and very fun. To begin, purchase a bunch of green onions or scallions from the grocery store. Be sure that the roots are about 1/2" long on the onions or scallions. Then, leave an inch to two inches up from the root and plant. Leave about 1/2" of the stem showing. This needs to begin in early spring. Using a plastic container is most effective in growing this type of plant. The growth process for these take about a week to two weeks. For the most effectiveness and to have the onions or scallions to last longer leave the root in the dirt and cut the plant off leaving a couple of inches. This will give product all spring, summer, and fall, and the cheapest product that I have grown.

The last product that is inexpensive to grow is the vegetable potatoes. This can be done in a plastic bucket. There is a lengthy process that is explained in the video below. You begin by purchasing potatoes and allow eyes to grow on the potatoes. These eyes will be planted in the container that is used and covered with dirt. Both white or red potatoes can be planted. The video below discusses planting red potatoes.

There are many other types of vegetables or fruits that can be grown in containers. Some more veggies that can be grown in containers are tomatoes, lettuce, green beans, broccoli and cauliflower. Some fruits that can be grown in containers are strawberries, blueberries and lemons. These fruits are easiest fruits to grow. Container gardening can be fun and worry free of the cost. Enjoy the time you spend in watching your veggies grow, and then enjoy cooking with them.

Would you consider container gardening to save money?
