The Many Uses of Chalkboard Paint and Magnetic Paint.
Many uses for Chalkboard Paint.
Chalkboard paint and magnetic paint is so much fun. It’s easy to use. I bought mine at Home Depot. The acrylic paints come in the brush on paints or spray paints. It's easy to paint on and dries like a flat paint.
Here are the decorative chalkboards you can create with chalkboard paint.
We put chalkboard paint on the door heading into our laundry room. Now I have a good place to leave notes or write a grocery list.
I wish they had this when our kids were little I would have painted a wall in each kid's room in chalkboard paint. It's great for a child's room or a playroom.
Place chair rail down your hall or in a room and paint it with chalkboard paint for the kids play on for hours of fun.
You can also buy chalk pens or markers. They work better than regular chalk and they will erase. They come in all colors. They can be bought on the Internet they're called wet erase liquid chalk markers. In our town, I can't find them, but I'm sure they can be bought in places like Hobby Lobby.
Bought Markers
I went to the big city and stopped at Hobby Lobby and I did buy some chalkboard markers. The ones I bought are called Bistro Chalk Markers they were $11.99 for four. Now I think this is expensive and I have no idea how long they will last. They're also called light board markers and they do write on glass. There were no instructions on how to use them. I shook them well then dabbed them on a piece of paper until I could see color coming into the white tip. They worked great. It just took a bit to get them going. Be very sure to snap the tops on tight you need to hear the snap when you put the top on if you don't they will dry up fast.
I put them in the glass like you see in the picture this is because they need to be stored upright and with caps on tight.
The colors are bright, not sure if you can see it in the picture. Just have to be careful when using them not to smudge what you have already done.
You can also use pastel chalks found in craft stores. I think when you see menus done up so nice on chalkboards in restaurants, they have been done with pastels.
There are also different crafts you can do with chalkboard paint. I just bought an old globe at a rummage sale. I'm putting chalkboard paint on it. When I'm done with it I'll put it on here.
Here are some craft uses for chalkboard paint
Chalkboard paint can be put on a wall and left as is for kids to use.
If you want a different design for the room you can use chalkboard painted wall to put your own designs on like the photos above.
Paint flower pots to plant herbs and put the name of the herbs on the pot.
Buy the small empty paint cans and use them for party favors. You can buy the plain cans at home improvement stores.
Paint it on old globes for design in a child’s room or on a desk. There are so many old globes now they can be bought at rummage sales. Lots of globes are outdated now and people don't want them.
Paint a family tree on the wall and chalk in all the names and added green leaves. You can also add a small photo of each person to the branches.
Paint a dresser or cabinet and a design on it and change the design whenever you want. If it's a kids dresser you can add the names of the items in each drawer.
Paint a lamp shade if it's not made of cloth and put on your own design.
Paint the top of a table for the kids. They can use it to draw on or have them chalk pictures on the table than polyester or lacquer over and save their artwork. So cute and sweet.
Label the jars in the pantry with chalk paint. When you change the item in the jar, change the name with chalk. Paints like Rustoleum ChalkBoard can be used right on a glass.
Paint a map of the US on the kids wall with names of all the states. Won't take them long to learn the states from this.
Label the top of a canning jar.
Turn an old messed up refrigerator into a chalkboard.
Something small chalkboard paint on rocks. Write little sweet words.
Eggs for Easter
Pumpkins look great done in chalkboard.
Many Things You Can Do With Chalkboard Paint
Let's Talk Magnetic Paint
Where to buy chalkboard and magnetic paint.
I have seen chalkboard paint sold on HSN and different places where it comes in smaller tubes. If you want to paint on the cheap then buy it at home improvement stores.
There are just so many different uses. Be creative and come up with some of your own decorative chalkboards.
Chalkboard paint is also a good way to recycle old items like the door pictured. Old doors can be found just about anywhere. Take three doors put them together and make them into a room divider and paint with chalkboard paint or magnetic paint.
I have an old wardrobe in the barn and I think this chalk paint would be a good idea for it.
I heard Nat Berkus say chalkboard paint is old. This was his words today on his show, but I think he is wrong. I love Nat, but he is not always right. Many people still like to use chalkboard paint.
I really like the Christmas Scene I think it is so pretty and just done in chalk.
Paint a wall in the kitchen. Give the kids chalk and let them go. This would keep them close while you're making a meal. I always hated my little ones wandering off while I was trying to get the meal on the table. Just so they're old enough not to eat the chalk.
If you don't want to use paint you can always buy chalkboard contact paper it works just as well.
How To Apply Magnectic and Chalkboard Paint From Rust-Oleum.
Thank you for contacting Rust-Oleum Product Support. It is possible to use the Chalkboard paint over the Magnetic Primer to create a magnetic chalkboard.
There are several things to keep in mind when using the magnetic primer. The first thing is the iron-containing pigment in the paint can easily settle to the bottom of the can. So stirring to get all of the pigment re-incorporated into the paint is essential.
Also, it's important to use the right amount of paint for the area you're painting. Ideally, one quart of the primer is needed for about a 16 sq. ft. (4 ft. by 4 ft.) area. If the product is not applied heavily enough, you won't get the full magnetic effect. If it takes more than 3 coats to get the proper amount on the surface, it's ok; simply keep applying until you have the correct amount on the surface for the area you are covering.
The smoother you get the primer on the better it works since the magnet will have more contact points to hang on with, so a foam roller is recommended for application. Larger, flexible magnets are usually the best to use since they're stronger and have more surface area. As a primer, this product can be painted over with just about any kind of wall paint without affecting the magnetism.
To condition your chalkboard, allow the paint to dry for at least three days and then lay a piece of chalk flat on the surface and cover the entire area in chalk, then erase with a standard eraser. This puts a fine layer of chalk dust on the surface and helps to improve the erasibility of the chalk.

Magnetic Paint
There is also a Magnetic Chalkboard Paint it is expensive. I think you're better off to paint the chalkboard and the magnetic paints separate. If you can't find the Magnetic Chalkboard Paint than buy a can of magnetic paint and a can of chalkboard paint. Paint on the magnetic first and put chalkboard over the top. Rust-Oleum makes both magnetic and chalkboard both can be bought at Home Depot.
If you buy Krylon you can't do this with Krylon magnetic paint it won't work with chalkboard paint over the top of the magnetic.
Magnetic paint can be put on the wall and any color you want can be put over the top of it. If you want a magnetic wall yellow go ahead and paint over magnetic paint with the yellow. If you have leftover wall paint from your original wall color, paint on magnetic paint and paint original wall color over the top. Chalkboard paint will work just fine over Rust-Oleum according to their website.
I also sent an email and ask Rust-Oleum if the chalkboard paint would work over the magnetic paint just to make sure. The answer I received is to the right in blue.

This is quite interesting. I like to make my own paint when I have time. If I am not mistaken, then magnetic paint is black iron oxide, or magnetite, being used as a pigment. Not sure what is used for chalkboard paint but I bet its something like powdered slate.
One day I’ll buy the Home Depot version and make my own magnetic paint to see how they differ and how they are similar.
This is a great hub for people who want to learn a fun new craft. Pinning this to my 'Crafts & Instructions' board.
I should really do this for jars in my pantry! Going to share this again by tweeting. Very useful hub! Will create a new board on Pinterest titled Useful Tips and Ideas for this.
I love how versatile chalkboard and magnetic paints are. You have some great photos here. A friend gave me a little chalkboard for my kitchen once with these words painted on:
Thank God for Dirty Dishes,
They Have a Tale to Tell.
While Other Folks are Hungry,
We're Eating Pretty Well.
I have always loved to have this little chalkboard and poem in my kitchen. It's a good reminder to us all!
Love all the ideas. I used an old plastic picture frame and made a small portable one for the nieces and nephews to play with. Can get dusty, so they have to go outside or sit down at the counter so they can periodically use the damp cloth to catch the leavings.
Wow, great hub! Love the decorative touches with chalkboard paint. I would never get anything done though...I would spend all of my time doodling on the walls! :)
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE - both! I like the diy because of all the different colors that you can make. I especially love it in the kitchen. We made a very large frame around a portion of one of our walls where we post notes, recipes and grocery lists. Fun hub -thanks.

I never knew about magnetic paint. There are no magnetic surfaces in our RV, and this would be great to use on a cabinet door, so that we have a place to stick notes and magnets! Love your chalkboard ideas, too! Voted up and pinned!
Wow, so interesting and full of fun! I didn't knew about these kind of paints and markers. Anybody into arts and crafts (even those who're not) would love to give it a try. And I can see that it's useful for kids as well.

Loved the globe idea.
Had chalkboard paint on one of the doors in my old house, thinking about adding it to my current house now. Thanks

Great info. Will have to check if we can get chalkboard paint here in Latvia. Have a couple of things that should be renewed.
Love the idea of painting an old fridge with this chalkboard paint. A good place to write your grocery list, or tonight's menu, or a reminder not to eat after 7pm! I think I'd leave sections unpainted in order to attach my many magnets, though! Great decorator ideas. Voted Up and Useful
Great ideas thank you. I have some digusting green plastic planters, now I can get to look good.
I have seen chalkboards used in restaurants as decorator walls, etc... this is a fabulous decorator idea! I love it! Thanks for the creative decorating inspiration! I may just have to try it myself!
