The Tragedy of Abandoned Houses
Longing to Fix Them Up and Live There
My husband and I always feel sad when we're driving around and we see abandoned houses just sitting there, empty and delapidated. We often talk about how we wish we could live there and fix it up, and restore the house to its "original glory" (to quote my husband). My son is so cute. He thinks we can just move into one of these abandoned houses and start fixing it up. If only it worked that way!
Old Houses Have More Character
It's especially sad to see old houses being abandoned and then eventually torn down, knowing that the older houses are the ones that have character. The new subdivisions are so cookie-cutter. They're nice-looking houses, but they all look the same, which is so boring.
Home Ownership is a Far-Off Dream (For Us)
My husband and I dream of owning a home someday, but home prices in California are so high that we wonder how we'll ever be able to. Seeing abandoned houses that have so much character just sit there, boarded up and rotting away, is so depressing. It seems like such a waste, but we would not be able to afford to buy a fixer-upper and restore it anyway. Still, we hope to be able to save up enough to purchase a home someday, although that unfortunately won't save all the old and forgotten houses out there.
